I have suspected Crohn's disease, and confirmed GERD.

For around 18 months i have this horrible orange coating on my tounge. It is there every morning, and after i do my best to brush it off, its there again by early or late evening. It covers most of the tongue, except from around the tip and sides, and is not nice to look at. Yep, i've got a serious complex about it.

Crohn's was first suspected in January 2011, and GERD confirmed in April 2011. Since January 2011 i have been taking 3000mg pentasa tablets daily for Crohn's, but have never been prescribed anything for GERD. As the discolouration started around summer 2010, it cannot be anything to do with Pentasa.

Does anyone have any experience of this? I'd really like to know exactly whats causing it and if there is anything i can do/take to prevent it from occuring. I asked my gastrointerologist about it but she had no clue why its happening and was not interested in investigating further.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Ali

Hum... I really don't know if that could be it but it somewhat makes me think of a mycosis. I know that some over counter lozenges with antifungal are available, they could maybe worth a try. Here they are made by GSK pharma and are called Dequadin. I don't know if they would be powerful enough to get ride of the problem if it were to be caused by a fungus but it may worth a try. I would speak with a pharmacist to see if there is something similar and see if there is any contraindications to try it.

Perhaps Thrush???

As Jane has said, maybe lozenges or you may need to go to Nilstat drops. It's probably worth a try.

Both of my kids had a coated tongue in their pre diagnosis period that cleared up once they treated and in remission. I have always thought, in their case, it was a sign of active Crohn's.
