Hey guys,

I'm from new Zealand so medical marijuana isn't available here I believe. Anyway long story short, I have a cousin who grows MJ for his own medical reasons and am thinking about buying some. I actully talked to my parents about it and they thought it wasnt a bad idea (believe me they aren't potheads at ALL, on the contrary.)

I will only try it in edible form though... smoking seems pointless to me as drs always tell my smoking is the worst thing ever for crohns.

I am just dumbfounded what is the process ? Do you just make brownies and put in MJ flakes? Like a spice? Or whAt lol.

Is there an art to it so you absorb more?

Anyway hope I don't sound like too much of an idiot... Lol

Okay. So many things to write about.

Marijuana in general:
Marijuana (be it either smoke or eaten), contains CBDs (cannabinol and cannabidol), they react with the lining of the gut (specifically the CBD2 receptors) to provide anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects, that can help heal the top layer of the digestive tract. Plus just the regular muscle relaxing properties of pot, help smooth out the muscles reducing cramping.

On the act of smoking:
it is not "smoking" in general that is bad for Crohn's, it is smoking tobacco that is bad for Crohn's.
All smoking is bad for you in some way, the fact that you are inhaling anything that is burning is not good for the lungs. On a gram per gram basis the physical act of smoking pot, is worse than tobacco because marijuana burns at a higher temp than tobacco, as such the smoke it self can cause more physical damage. With that said, the actual damage is minimal, because you would be smoking far less pot that a person who smoke tobacco. Chemically speaking, there are far more dangerous chemicals in tobacco than in pot, in fact pot has a lot of helpful chemicals. So it's kind of breaks even (the safest way to smoke is a vaporiser, followed, by a joint, then bong/waterpipe, then regular pipe).
marijuana in it self has some cancer fighting compounds that are actually beneficial in helping lung cancer patients. The damage from it come from the temperature of the smoke and not actually the smoke.

On the eating of cannabis:
There are many ways to ingest it. The CBDs in pot are soluble in alcohol and fat. The main methods of extracting are either soaking in alcohol to create a tincture or simmering in a fat (butter or oil). Those will extract more of the compounds and they will be very strong. You can those use those in cooking. The other method is to grind it up really fine and mix it into whatever you are cooking, it won't be a strong but it'll do the job. It goes well with strong tasting flavours like chocolate, and has a taste slightly like mint.

The "high" from eating lasts a lot longer, it can last 8-12 hours. I personally don't eat if I have work the next morning.

I can try to answer any questions that you have. But there are lots of recipes on the internet.

I have drank it by doing the following, put a significant amount of milk in a saucepan and heat it up. Put a significant amount of marijuana in it, it will have to be more than if you were to put it in a pipe or roll it up. Sorry, that I don't have a good rule of thumb, perhaps consult online for specific recipes like vonfunk says. I also, added some butter a slice or two to the milk and MJ to extract more cannaboids. The heat I don't think is necessary but it is a catalyst. This makes a very rich concoction, you might want to add some flavoring to it, chocolate flavor perhaps? I just drank the milk butter and mj the few times I did it :) The high does last longer, try it on the weekend the first time and enjoy the ride, possibly have your family with you so that you will be more relaxed.
