Hi folks,

I am coming to the end of my pred course, on 2 * 5mg a day at the moment.

I am starting to get lower bowel discomfort, and heartburn.

This worries me a bit as my pain i get before i was on the roids was like this but obviously much more severe.

I am only into week 1 of the azathioprene and i know it can take a month or so to work if its going to etc.

I was wondering if a pro-biotic would help, i am not constipated, and the pain is probably just a lot of wind\stool moving along a tight bit.

I tried yakult once but found it made me worse but this could all have been coincidence of a flare.

I have heard that Actimel does actually help some folks, and i wondered if it was worth trying.

I am seeing the specialist tomorrow so will enquire, but i wondered if anyone had any success with this relieving wind and indigestion while on azathioprene?

thanks folks.

You may need to slow the pred taper to allow the aza time to work. Something to discuss with your specialist.

Good luck

I was wondering if it was worth doing a slightly dofferent taper.

Normally i get 8 weeks, starting at 40mg going down 5mg a week.

But asking if i can do maybe 6mg going down so its a shorter course?

Obviously i would rather avoid it as i get lower back nerve pain, cramps and acne wih it now but it does help.

Really hope Aza works as if it doesnt i dont know what else is left as Asacol did nothing. :(

I agree with Catherine about trying to taper off Prednisone more slowly. As for probiotics, I had a similar problem recently and I got relief by taking Phillips Colon Health.

What Sarah's GI did was take her back to last safe level, then restarted the taper a week later.
