This is my first time on this forum and I'm looking to find if others have a good solution for diarrhoea - I have some great medication which works 100% but don't want to be repetitive or boring if others already have a similar solution.

Hiya Monty
and welcome

What meds do you take?
If ever I have an attack/diarrhea, I go on a low residue diet, this slows down the diarrhea and gives the bowels a rest. Ok short term, not ideal long term tho.
Make sure you drink tons of water too, electrolytes can get low, bananas are good to up potassium, also helps to bind stools.
I occasionally take Immodium but only in emergencies.
good luck

Hi Astra,
The reason I joined the forum was that someone had told me they had crohns but that no medication was being taken for the diarrhoea, and that the problem was always bad - as it had been for me pre 2006 when I went to live in California.

My GP there trialled me on some medication which was superb, but unfortunately not available back here in Aus when we returned in 2007. But my GP here prescribes an alternative for me called Questran Lite - it's supposed to reduce cholesterol but for me it's a total success!! Couldn't be more normal in fact and I would totally recommend trying it.

I was on prednisone in 2002 and had to have surgery, the prednisone rotted my hips and now I have 2 shiny new ones, but the Questran changed my life. I take immodium, pentasa sachets and Questran and am currently in remission.

Just did a search on Questran and it seems it's known by sufferers, but I hadn't seen anything before and am surprised more don't take it - albeit a bit like drinking lemony wallpaper paste!

Yeah Questran is well known on here too.
Well done Monty on reaching remission!

Hi Monty,

As Astra as said there a quite a few members here that use Quetsran or its equivalent in pill form. My daughter was prescribed Questran Lite following her ileocaecal resection back in 2006. She was 14 at the time, so young, and just couldn't overcome the taste and texture of it so refused to take it. For the next few years she planned her eating around her day, as you can imagine that wasn't overly successful but that was her preference. Anyway a couple of years ago she came upon psyllium husks in the supermarket and has been using those ever since. After a little tweaking she now takes about one teaspoon a day and normally will only have one solid motion a day. They action in the bowel the same way as Questran...absorbing excess bile salts due to the removal of the terminal ileum. It also has similar time restrictions as Questran does when it comes to taking other medications and supplements. Psyllium is also available in capsule form but as far as I am aware she has not used those.

My son also had the same resection last year and he uses psyllium as well.

It's wonderful to hear that you are in remission and that the Questran is doing its job!
