Is anyone using Tumeric?

Dr. Tung at Mayo said it might be effective - this is something new for me to learn.

Does anyone have knowledge to share? What it does? How to dose? How long it might take to have effect?

I've never tried it with Stephen but have read that it can be beneficial. You might find some info on it in the Diets, Supplements, etc. subforum.

Yes Grace tried it. However it can upset some peoples GI tracks. We had to stop it.

Make sure you buy from a good maker. Just like anything, if it's cheap it's a fake(ish). lol

Hi, I have been interested in certain foods that may help with crohns and such like! Things like turmeric, oily fish and green tea have a couple of benefits. Firstly they are all known to naturally reduce swelling and inflammation and also are thought to reduce tnf alpha levels within the body. These are linked to your immune system thus creating the crohns/ uc problems. If you can reduce the chance of your body attacking itself then it has to be a good thing. At present most docs will dismiss these as being not proven at this stage, they also say though that it can't hurt to try. As for doses, cooking with turmeric is easy and should be used as and when as a general spice, there are loads of indian foods that contain turmeric and most are real easy to cook! 3 cups of green tea a day is said to be the amount needed to make a bodily change and as much oily fish as you can cram in. I use the supplements as they are easier to take but am extremely partial to mackerel. I think it helped me internally and I'm sure it aided in my weight gain too. Some say though that farmed salmon, although an oily fish may actually act in reverse and can cause inflammation due to food they eat and chemicals etc. I don't know about this or how true it is! I truly believe we are what we eat so get on the net and check out inflammation reducing foods, there's a whole bunch waiting to be eaten! Good luck

Yes, I have heard turmeric could be beneficial but our GI isn't comfortable with too many supplements. Like grt73, we switched over our diets and it made a tremendous difference in O. I didn't go looking for anti inflammatory but rather went clean and vegetarian. It was amazing how many beneficial foods she started to eat and the difference it made. We also added in a bunch of spices (Tumeric being one of them) that we had never used.

Unfortunately, we have slipped away since Thanksgiving and then the packaged crap returned and while I don't have solid proof yet, she has been slipping in health a bit lately. So right after Christmas we are back on track full force. Just not worth trying with the holidays...which reminds me you girl will be EEN during the holidays. Bless her heart for trying at this time of year.

I had read about it quite a bit from the forum in the past, this is one of Dan’s threads…

…and there a loads of studies about it.

Matt started seeing a new GI 6 months ago and at the initial consultation he recommended that he use a Turmeric supplement for its anti-inflammatory properties.
After much reading I came to the conclusion that Turmeric’s bioavailability is enhanced by black pepper. Some sites claim the enhancement is by very significant amounts, as in 1000/2000 percent. I don’t know how true this is but the general consensus seems to be that a supplement with black pepper is preferable so that is the way I went.

This site give a good balanced overview plus recommended doses:

University of Maryland Medical Centre: Turmeric

From reading the forum some people can take Turmeric with no issue but others find that it does cause stomach issues. Matt hasn’t had any problems but I can’t say if it is helping or not as he is in remission. I have him on one capsule a day with the following make up:

700mg per capsule (498mg Curcuminoids) ~
1 Capsule per serving ~
100 servings ~
525mg Curcuma longa Extract (95% Curcuminoids), 175mg Piper nigrum ~
(3:1 Curcumin/Pepper Ratio) ~

Hi we are using tumeric. We buy it from amazon viva labs curcumin. It has the black pepper that Dusty was talking about. Which is called Bioperene for its medical name by the way. Tumeric indeed is not well absorbed by the body unless it is combined with Bioperene. I am also taking it for my illness and for me I have an illness that causes swelling sometimes in my affected foot and wrist. Since I have been taking the tumeric I have noticed a huge reduction in the swelling so I am hopeful it is helping Caitlyn on the inside where it is not visible.

My son has thought about trying turmeric but he is afraid of the black pepper. He won't eat anything with it. Do Matt or Caitlyn have any problem with black pepper in their diet?

No none and it is pharmaceutical grade black pepper so maybe it is not the same a the one used in cooking.

Hey xmdmom,

Matt doesn’t have any issues that I am aware of. His diet as a whole tends to be a pretty bland one without much embellishment as that is what he prefers, but having said that he has no problems with spicy Asian type foods…Indian, Thai etc.

Dusty. :)
