Where to start?

In August 2009 I started pooping, nonstop. Finally exhausted and dehydrated I was admitted to the local hospital. After a painful IV and fluids, I came back to life, but was admitted to hospital. The next day I had my first colonoscopy and by that night I had my diagnosis of Crohn's. I cried and cried, but eventually adjusted and made my choice to fight this head on. With antibiotics I got under control and continued my life.

Two months later, and back in hospital. It sucked, I became more determined to fight this naturally. With research I learned of the SCD diet, and started to go to acupuncture regularly.

I made little progress after my release and by the end of January I was back in hospital, facing the fight of my life. I had developed blood clots and had at least one pulmonary embolism. I was given blood thinners and ended up bleeding severely from the colon. I was rushed to a larger hospital, 4 hours away.

I was put in the ICU for a week, put on remicade and had a filter surgically placed into my vena cava. I had no idea that was going to happen until I was on the operating table. Eventually I was sent back to my home hospital, on blood thinners. I was happily recovering for a few days until the blood thinners caused me to bleed again from the colon and I was sent back to Kelowna General Hospital. After my next dose of Remicade I was released outright from the hospital. I had two days at home before I was bleeding again. Back to the Hospital, and then flown to Kelowna.

An over night stay and I was taken off blood thinners and I was released.
Remicade worked for a few months, but then in August, bamm, hit with another flair up. I fought it for a few months, but was again hospitalized in October, twice, and put on Humira. The second time I lived in the hospital for a month.

Sometime during these stays I contracted C - Diff. Man that sucked. I was released and had to be hospitalized on Christmas eve because my leg had swelled. This meant back on bloodthinners . Another two weeks in the hospital. And again out for a month, then back in....
I finally got diagnosed with C - Diff.

I was released and continued to fight. I didn't get better and finally asked for a colectomy.

It took two months, but in the last month everything has moved quickly. I saw a specialist, a week later a surgeon and two days later the colon was gone.

I'm in recovery. I feel better than I have in years. I still have hiccups with the bags leaking. I hope that gets easier with time. I'm happy I did it.
My GI guy stopped short of saying that special word "cure", but he was very optimistic that my life should get way better. I hope he's right. I hope this is my cure.

So sorry you had such a tough year! What a champ to get through that! Glad to hear you are feeling better!

Welcome! WOW! You've been on quite a ride. I pray that your colectomy does the trick for you. One thing I'd suggest is getting your vitamin and mineral levels checked, with an emphasis on vitamin D. With your being in Canada, chances are extremely high that you're deficient and I feel that proper supplementation will lessen the chances of your disease recurring.

Again, welcome :) I hope you keep us updated to your progress.

Good grief you have been through a lot! I am glad you are starting to feel a lot better, hopefully with a little more time for things to fully settle hiccups and leakages will be sorted as well. Please have a look at our stoma sub forum as there should be some helpful tips and support there. :welcome: to the forum, really glad you have decided to join us.

Wow! You have really been on a roller coaster!! I'm sorry you had to deal with all that! Crohn's is crazy!!! Sounds like you get to breathe a bit easier now....I had c-diff once, lost 20 lbs in two weeks, and you are right, it sucks! I work in the health field and never knew what those people were going through that had it until I was lucky enough to see first hand!!! Hope things continue to look up for you!

 Hey HappyPanda!!!! Soooo glad that you are doing better--and yup, I agree that life without the nasty colon is bliss! I'm 7 weeks postop---went back to work at 6 weeks postop. I'm tired, of course, and my bum still has some incisional pain--but I feel much improved. Fought it for 12 years---and it's time to live and eat! Keep getting better, Panda! :panda: Dana
