I read this on the CCFA website. I don't know April but I am madder than you-know-what on her behalf! I don't even know if our state has a law that says places have to allow restroom access but I'm going to find out!

Being Deined Access to an Employee only restroom, when my state has the restroom act
Posted: Mar 24, 2011

Hello, my name is April Darvin and I have had Crohn's Disease for 27 years. My state which is Tennessee has "The restroom act" and it has been in effect since July 1, 2008. On March 9, 2011, I worked later than I usually do, so my Mom had to pick up my son for me because I am a single mother. I ran an errand before calling and placing an order at a local pizza chain. When I entered the establishment, there was a customer that was before me. As I, approached the counter and paid for my order, I felt my bowels were moving. I asked how long it would take before my order was completed. I was told three minutes. I then asked if I could use there restroom. I was told no and that I needed to go next door. I explained that I had Crohn's disease as well as had my documentation to prove my condition, I was still told no. I explained the bill which is House Bill 122 "The Restroom Act here in TN. I went through two managers and I believe a head manager. I was still denied access to the restroom. After approximately 9 minutes which my bowels were starting to flow. I walked out of that establishment with food in my hand and having an accident on myself.

When I picked up my six year old son, his statement was "Mom what reeks" I cried hysterically, he said "did you have an accident with your Crohn's?" I said yes. Although my state has this bill, I am pushing for this bill to be in all 50 states. I have been asked to speak at the CCFA walk and at a charity function this fall. And hopefully, I will be able to speak to Congress on Capital Hill for IBD day on the Hill. My goal is to make sure that every patient who suffers from Crohn's and Colitis or any other IBD doesn't have to go through this.

Respectfully submitted,

April M. Darvin

So upsetting! I live in Michigan...I don't know if they have this act. But I was visiting some friends at Michigan State University and we were walking down the street and when you have to go you have to go so I quickly ran into a dingy pizza place and asked to use the bathroom. The person working there said in order to use the restroom I had to order some food. I was so mad! And had to spend 6 bucks on bread sticks that I didn't even eat!
