Hi guys/girls,

I was diagnosed with crohn's in 2013...

I had surgery and the removal of a foot of my small intestines... I had a temporary ileostomy and that was then reversed 3 months later...

I was put on Imuran and infleximab and I could definitely say I was feeling good...

Until, last week I had a routeen colonostomy and the results came back saying I had ulceration in my colon, something that I didn't have before... It scared me, and now my attitude has changed...

Can I do anything to heal this? Or can I prevent it from getting worse in anyways... I don't want to get sick again... My boyfriend wanted me to go out for a few drinks with him this weekend, but im too afraid to drink!

Please give me some advice...

Hi!

It's good that you've been feeling better on your meds but you can't really argue with the ulcers seen on the colonoscopy. It would seem pretty clear that the medication you are on isn't controlling the disease well enough and that your doctor needs to change either the medication or the dosing to get it under control.

It would be useful for you to know if your bloods are currently showing raised inflammatory markers (ESR and CRP) or if your faecal calprotectin levels are raised. This would tell you whether these tests would be useful in your particular case to monitor disease activity (they usually are but for a few people aren't) - and how well any changes in your treatment are working, as you wouldn't want to have a colonoscopy too often!

I'm sure you are well aware of the importance of keeping this disease under control and completely understand you being scared - it is sensible to be scared in a way. But on the plus side it's good that a routine colonoscopy was done and showed you that the meds aren't working well enough because it gives you the opportunity to try and find something that works better for you.

Has your doctor talked to you about the results yet? They might want to try giving you infliximab more often or at a different dose, or trying humira or a different biologic instead. Or they might want to swap the Imuran for something else. I think those would all be possibilities. Of course there are other treatments available too. And you could try a liquid diet like Modulen or Elemental to heal the ulceration.

Thank you for your advice... no I haven't heard anything back about my results yet... I had the tests done this day week so id be hoping to hear from the doctors in the next few days...

I hate the sound of a liquid diet but sure if it needs to be done it needs to be done... Fingers and toes crossed it won't!
