My daughter has the Upper Gi & Colonoscopy scheduled for Weds. Do you have any tips on how to prepare for this and what to expect right after the procedures are done? I am concerned about how my little girls body is going to react to all of this. She is already completely sick and barely eats and the thought of not allowing her to eat makes me so sad. She get migraines when she doesn’t eat right away.

Thank you.

What a worry, my 13yr old son had both about 8 weeks ago, In ireland its under sedation only, might be different and US, he was fine after it, didnt eat that evening though, was done late in the day so he just really wanted to sleep off the sedation was on EEN only anyhow so food after wasnt important to us. Best of luck, it'll go smooth

Things to do
Calmoseptin bum creme it’s behind the pharmacy counter at target etc...
Used as a barrier during clean out
An iPad or DVD player during clean out
Ask if zofran is ok the morning of the scope
Bring extra clothes for you and her
Empty belly’s still vomit
Bring a backpack with shelf stable snacks for yourself and water
Eat during her scope (30 minutes approximately)
She may get mean when she wakes up
No red popsicles after the scope - gets confused with blood

She will think she needs to go after the scope
It typically is all gas - they give

Light low fat meal after the scope keeps the tummy happy
Sugary drinks are better after the scope vs water
Less likely to vomit
She will be tired but next day fine except a sore throat

Her hard part is clean out
Your hard part is watching them put her out
Most give iv after the kiddo is asleep and let you hold her hand during the gas to put her out

Versed makes kids forget most of the day
It makes my kiddo angry so we skip it

Good luck

Clear broth (no protein, dairy etc), jello and Italian ice (lemon, lime not any dyes not allowed by your GI. Some do only red some red plus others) help the kids feel like they are eating.

Usually they are drinking so much that they don't even get hungry.

My daughter also gets migraines and vomits if left not eating for too long but the hydration she gets with clean out usually keeps those at bay. Caffeine helps keep migraines at bay so some ice tea or other favorite soda might help also. But honestly, my two girls prefer just plain water all day long.

Our GI says start at 1 p.m. but that keeps us up way into the early morning hours so we start earlier than that.

Is she doing Miralax clean out? Sometimes it takes an extra few drinks to get totally cleaned out.

Baby wipes are more gentle on the bottom, than toilet paper.

A towel or pad under their bottom in bed, just sayin'.

Good Luck!

^^^yeah that
We start at 8 am
Finish by bed so he can sleep
Inpatient they start at 4 pm
So kiddo is up all night miserable

Definitely bring extra clothes for her! Also, we always have my kiddo sleep on a towel, it makes accidents easier to clean up. We start the prep early too.

It depends on the hospital, but often they will put the kiddo to sleep before putting in the IV. If your child is very anxious, they may offer oral Versed while you are waiting to go back. That will make her more relaxed and she won't remember much of what is happening.

They let me be there while putting my daughter to sleep. It is hard to watch the first time.

After the procedure, you can expect some belly pain from the gas they pump in. We always do a light meal after. Some kids wake up very nauseous from anesthesia - they can give Zofran if she is really sick.

The prep is really the worst part. We always have some movies or TV shows set up on the ipad so she can watch in the bathroom.

Good luck!!

I wanted to add - we also give broth and popsicles so my daughter feels like she is eating something. Jello is also usually allowed.

Once she starts drinking the Gatorade with Miralax, she will get pretty full with that - she probably won't be hungry. It is a LOT that they have to drink. It may make her nauseous.

Some GIs say no red Gatorade (ours does) and others say no red, blue or purple. You can also use Pedialyte.

My daughter usually stops wanting broth or anything once she starts drinking the Gatorade because it fills her up.

Hang in there - it is just one day of not eating. It sounds worse than it actually is and hopefully the tests will give you some answers.

Organic Gatorade is clear
They have lemon mixed berry and strawberry
Most target and grocery stores carry them
Clear broth but fat free
No bubbles for pop

My daughter will be 11 in a week and was just diagnosed in October. If it helps at all, she was not hungry during the prep and it went really smoothly. The fluids kept her feeling full and she enjoyed that it was a day of movies and games with mom snuggling on the couch. As for after, I was amazed how normal she felt so quickly. Ours were on separate days but she went to dance the day after her colonoscopy and to school after the MRE. The only part she complained about was the drink she had to drink for the MRE, not necessarily the taste as much as the volume in a short period. Good luck, this forum was my sanity during the early days.

Thank you so much! How is your daughter doing now? What medication is working for her?

She is doing well! I will let the other ladies chime-in on meds because they know TONS more than me and my daughter is a bit of an unusual case because she was diagnosed with Celiac and is technically Indeterminate IBD leaning towards Crohn's. Keep us updated and BIG hugs to you!

She was officially diagnosed with mild Crohn’s. Biopsy results show inflammation throughout. She will start steroids this week after she gets a tb test and then will eventually go to 6mp.

Anyone look into CBD oil?

When you say throughout, do you mean small and large intestines are affected? I hope she is on the mend quickly and I know it is a lot to take on emotionally for her and the family so big hugs of support to you all.

Sorry about the dx but the good news is you know what you are dealing with and can move forward with treatment and getting her feeling better.

From all I have read (from many adult IBD GI's) CBD oil so far has shown only a little bit of relief for symptoms but no endoscopic healing.

As her insides start to heal, she should start feeling better.

Sorry to hear about the diagnosis, but glad that you have one. Hope that her treatment works well for her.

Sorry to hear about the diagnosis. But the good news is that she'll be starting on treatment soon and will hopefully feel better soon. Steroids usually help a lot and usually help quickly.

As for CBD oil, we have looked into it but it seems to work for symptoms, and not really disease control, as far as I have read.

We have looked into it for pain control. We have also looked into medical marijuana but decided we wanted to wait till our daughter was older since there is some research saying it can impact brain development.

I don't know if the same is true for CBD oil though.

my daughter just had the upper/lower scopes done inpatient about 3 weeks ago. It was not pleasant but my child is extremely difficult. They made her fast for 36 hours which made it even worse then they woke us up at midnight before the test & made her drink more!!! She had to be the cleanest patient ever. haha!! We were sent to the waiting room before they sedated her (she already had iv). She is actually the sweetest thing when she wakes up (wish we could get that prescription hee hee). We eat light till the next day. She does have a sore throat for a bit but it gets better. I definitely recommend baby wipes over the john wayne tp they have there--she used them the whole time she was in the hospital. Good luck--she will do great. :)
