I am having some burning when I urinate and I'm wondering if the pouch which touches my penis at times may have contributed some bacteria to the area. Do you think its possible or has anyone else gotten a UTI from emptying and having contents spill or a bag with a little fecal content that touched you and you may not have realized?

I haven't gone to a doctor yet but worry about a UTI, I'm not sexually active now so it wouldn't be an STD.

There is nothing obvious around the head of the penis that may be causing burn as urine passes over it?

If it isn’t too personal a question, are you circumcised?

If you have had faecal matter on the head of your penis then it is possible that it may be the cause of a UTI. UTI’s are not very common at all in men under 50 and one of the main reasons is the anatomy of the male urinary system. In women the urethra is only about 4cm long so it is very easy for bacteria to track from the perianal area up into the bladder. In men the urethra is 20cm long, so a far greater journey for any bacteria. Plus there is the obvious difference in where the opening of the urethra is.

Matt did have some urinary issues a while back where he complained of flank pain but also had some issues with burning. He had numerous tests that came up negative and it resolved of its own accord. The doctors that he saw at the time each commented that a UTI at his age was usually linked to something like prostatitis or infection in another structure of the uro-genital region like the testes or kidneys.

Good luck ngng, I hope things settle without the need for intervention.

Thanks Dusty it makes sense that women are more prone given the larger opening and that it seems harder for a male to have this issue. I am circumcised, in the U.S. I think almost everyone is. I am just concerned knowing the bag isn't always so clean because pouch emptying isn't a science and can get gross and the pouch pokes at my groin so I hope nothing got in.

I'm not sure what else causes burning but I really don't want more antibiotics. I just finished a course of cipro.

It's quite possible that you have a yeast infection, which is sometimes a result of antibiotic usage. While there would normally be some discharge, and perhaps a foul smell, the burning sensation is usually the first indication of onset.

I remember when I used to get them, there was a one pill cure for it, but it's been some time now, so not sure what the treatment would be.

Thanks. I'm going to try cranberry juice to clear it up. Now im so nauseous too and had my tummy drop a ginger lozenge but that may just be a side effect of methotrexate. Ugh illness.
