Hello, I know some may be like woah, but I am trying to lose weight.. I am taking 100mg of Imuran and 2g of Pentasa a day, I am really struggling to lose weight. Under my consultants instructions I am not to do vigorous exercise, and healthy diet alone isn't working. Is medication having an impact? or the disease itself? I am 5 foot 6 inches and weigh 9 stone 8. Aiming for 9. Is this an impossible dream?

Unless you are naturally a skinny person you will need to have a healthy diet along with the correct exercise (doesnt have to be vigorous) to lose weight.

Apart from the dreaded "moon face" I dont think weight gain is a side effect of aza.

Normally crohns would cause you to lose weight as it effects the amount you can absorb.

What was the reason why you cannot do vigorous exercise as most docs say if you want to and can, do it?

Hey I have been taking Imuran for 12 years since I were diagnosed and never had a problem with weight gain .. Always had it with steroids .. Maybe you need to adjust your diet.. For example for me always cheese and bread make me gain weight once I controlled it I were surprised how much I lost ... Also I used to eat a lot of auger when I couldn't eat to give me more energy which was very bad for my health and weight..

Is it definitely weight gain you are experiencing and not just bloating. I know I spent ages trying to lose my gut when it turned out just to be inflamation. The only thing that worked was getting on top of my disease

I didn't know Aza could give you moon face. I started Aza on Monday and hope I dont have that side affect.

Wrt losing weight, why not try long walks? It wont put a strain on any joints if you where the correct foot wear and I heard it a good all rounder for exercising.

Im might be wrong actually, I can remember a few people on aza saying about moon face but they may have been on pred as well which could be the culprit

Just to confirm Aza does not give you moon face (Prednisolone does). I find one side effect of Aza is I get a lot of gas (burping/bloating etc) which can make me feel bigger than I am. I thought that was from the Crohns but actually I have had a recent colonoscopy which showed no active inflammation so it must be down to the Aza unfortunatley.
