Weight Gain from Humira?

I was diagnosed at the age of 46 with Crohn's Ileo Colitis in October of 2006. My GI doc put me on Pentasa and Imuran initially, but they didn't seem to do much of anything for me.

In the fall of 2007 I underwent stricturplasty on my small intestine. After which, I was put on Humira once every 2 weeks.

I was in 'remission' and feeling pretty good, until in 2009 I began showing extra-intestinal symptoms.

I began having terrible joint pains. I would ache from head to toe. A day walking the mall would mean 2 days of absolute pain where I could barely move.

The doctor ordered the usual tests ie colonscopy, barium xray, MRI and sent me to a rheumatologist who diagnosed me with fibromyalgia and put on Cymbalta.

The joint pains went away and am still on Cymbalta.

The results of the other tests showed that I had new areas of damage in my small intestine above where I had my first surgery.

I also noticed that I was beginning to gain weight. When I asked my doctor if it could possibly be the Humira, she told me that it normally would cause weight loss.

After all the tests, I ended up on injecting Humira once a week, taking 150 mg of Imuran (azathiorpine) daily, and 60mg of Cymbalta.
In the time since first being diagnosed until today, I have gained almost 40 lbs!!

I have tried just about everything and am unable to lose even 5 lbs!!
I would express my concerns to all of my doctors and when asked if it could be any of the meds, I was told no and that I needed to eat better and exercise more.

In March of this year, I had my quarterly exam with my GI dr and once again, she told me I needed to lose 30 lbs! At which time, she finally said that the HUMIRA is the cause of my weight gain!

Is anyone else having the same issues?? Has anyone had any luck losing weight and keeping it off while still on Humira??

Hello and welcome to the forum :bigwave: I have not been on Humira myself so could not comment on the weight issue it has caused, perhaps have a look at our Humira sub forum to see if anyone here has also experienced this: http://www.crohnsforum.com/forumdisplay.php?f=59. Also perhaps have a look at our diets and sups forum. How are things symptom wise for you? Are things settled?

Glad you have decided to join.

Hi there and welcome to the forum :) I'm glad you found your way here. The weight gain thing must be very frustrating :(

Have you had your vitamin D levels tested? If so, what were they? I ask because people with Crohn's Disease are commonly deficient and anytime someone says, "Fibromyalgia" I always wonder.

I wish you all the best.

Hi,
Humira shouldn't cause weight gain or weight loss. Most people do experience some gain, like I did, because if you are sickly beforehand and Humira helps you, you will be eating more and getting your body back to a proper weight.

Personally, after starting Humira, I gained weight because I had lost so much to being sick that feeling healthy allowed me to put weight on. So I wouldn't blame the Humira. Though it can be a sort of secondary effect, if that makes sense!

I've been on Humira since Feb 2011. I've probably gained 15lbs since then but I lost 20 with my last really bad flare so I'm not sure if they are related. I will say that I have a hard time losing weight since I started the Humira. I never had trouble before but now I maintain right about 130 which is a little high for me. I have asked my Doc about it too and while he didn't say anything about it causing weight loss he also couldn't say that it wasn't the reason that I cant seem to drop weight either. Sorry! Wish I could be of more help!

I also gained weight (25-30lbs w/2yrs of humira so far) after starting Humira. for me I feel it is only because Humira put me into longest remission for first time in 20 yrs. (Prior to treatment I was my sickest at 5' 7 1/2"and 110lbs and now weigh 150lbs) and found it very hard to lose but I think that's because I was so used to eating whatever I wanted whenever I wanted because my crohns made it fly right thru me! Also, at age 38 my metabolism has unfortunately slowed down like most women! I now have to actually watch what I eat ;-) I used to get upset because I'm so used to being so thin but I realize being healthy is much better than being sick ;-)

Diagnosed age 18
Been on all regular meds and Remicade, Cimzia and Humira
Currently my cocktail includes:
Humira 2 shots weekly
methotrexate 25mg(1shotweekly)
Folic Acid 2mg daily
Vit D 50,000 IU weekly
