Has anyone gained weight since starting Humira?

I don't know if it's the Humira, or the Prednisone I was on but none of my jeans fit anymore. :( And being a college kid its not like I can go out and buy new ones.

It's really making me upset and kinda depressed.. I used to be pretty thin and petite and now I feel fat and that I look pregnant. :(

I'd suspect its the prednisone but if the meds are fighting your disease and you are absorbing food more you may be gaining weight from that.

Prednisone weight gain is only temporary while you are on it. The moon face and other weight gain will dissipate as you ween off of it.

I was on prednisone for a very long time and am also a college student. Definitely know exactly what you are talking about because I gained quite a few pounds too. Don't worry though, I went off of it maybe a month ago or so and my face already looks thinner with a lot less of that 'bloat' that I was feeling. Although some of the weight does stay on because you were able to absorb your food better since it wasn't running right through you, try to stay thankful for that because at least that was what was making you better! It's only a few pounds and I was able to work it off pretty quickly, if you are going to stay on prednisone I suggest dieting!! It helped me keep from gaining too much when I was on it for over half a year.

Prednisone definitely makes you gain weight. There's no way around it really.

Also, if you are feeling better and eating more without being ill, that could definitely add to the weight as well. Obviously, its a good thing if you are able to eat more and not be sick! Just to make sure that wasn't taken the wrong way :)

I have been off of it for over a month now.. and I eat pretty healthy for being on campus, and I go to the gym. So depressing.. i'll keep working out and eating healthy i guess. Thanks!

I was on prednisone all summer and did not gain any weight. (and I was hungry all the time, eating like crazy but still did not gain weight) I was on 40 and then 30 mg. have weaned down to 10 now, but never gained weight until I started Humira, and then I gained 20 pounds in like a month!! And this week when I took my shot, I swear that the very next day I felt fatter. I suppose it could all be in my head, but I dont think so.

whats wierd is that even though I gained 20 pounds, my clothes still fit. I obviously look a little chubbier in them, but usually gaining 20 pounds would require buying new clothes.

I'm just really bummed because I had lost about 30 pounds from being sick, and now I have gained it all back again :(

20 pounds in a month is a lot but I wonder if you are responding to Humira and absorbing food better and that might be part of the reason?

deleted original post as it was a reply to the wrong thread. sorry

It will be the prednisolone... I gained 50lb over a year. It's not coming off either :(

Well obviously I know my doctor is not going to say that it is ok to change the dosing. But I have seen some people say they gained 50-70 pounds. that is not ok with me. If I continue to gain weight like this i will NOT continue on humira.

The weight you gain on a medication is from one of two things (or both): either from your body maintaining more water and becoming bloated from that, or because you're eating more from the hunger the med causes. The water bloating shouldn't be that large an amount, and it will go quite fast once you stop the med. The other weight will not go on if you can keep your diet the same. I know that is sometimes a lot easier said than done, but if you can there's no reason you'll gain weight - the medication itself can't cause weight gain, it's the extra calories it causes people to eat. And if you do gain weight from this, once hunger returns to normal after stopping the medication, the weight won't be any harder to lose than weight gained for any other reason.

I think nogutsnoglory has a good point about absorbing food better too. Also if a medication reduces symptoms, it may well increase hunger too simply because with less stomach pain, diarrhoea and everything else eating becomes easier.
