weight?

Hi All

Does everyone with IBD lose weight?

I cannot lose an ounce. My weight is stable but i have chronic diahrea and no blood loss.

I had thyroid cancer 2 yrs ago and i am struggling with absorbing thyroxine.

I am now on liquid thyroxine and this has helped stabalize my tsh and t4 levels a lot.

I am vit d deficient and on vit d capsules from hosp 20,000 once a week.

I just wondered why am i not losing weight like most of you are?

Love Dawn xx

What are your meals like? I lost alot of weight because I would not eat for 3 days at a time then Id eat rice for a day then nothing for another 3 days etc.

I lost some weight before I was diagnosed, but after being on Pentasa and getting some relief I am also having trouble with losing weight.

Hi fairy, I too seem unable to lose weight. I was very upset when I found out I had Crohn's in August this year, and discovered one of the side effects was weight loss. I started wondering if when I'm in remission, I'll start putting on heaps of weight!

But my GI said it kind of depends what stuff your bowel is capable of absorbing. Except for pred weight (which it seems I have avoided apart from my moon-face) I haven't put more on - except I think I have lost a little???

So no, not everyone gets the weight loss, even though some of us would like it!!!

In really only ever lose weight when I'm ill.

It's really impossible any other time. I've been exercising like crazy and have ended up putting weight on! Although not sure if that just muscle, or what.

The other thing I hate is that my consultants love it when I put weight on because it shows that I'm doing well. Grr

A lot depends where your disease is. If it is in the small bowel you will not absorb all the nutrients from your food, though you may not have the runs because the large bowel can do its job and absorb the excess water. If it is large bowel disease, even though you will have diarrhea by the time the food gets to the inflamed part and comes shooting out as diarrhea, the majority of the nutrients will have been absorbed.

My main weight loss happened right before being diagnosed because I couldnt eat. When I am flaring I might drop a few pounds but put them back on as soon as I am feeling better.

The only time I've lost substantial weight (35lbs) was when I had an obstruction and couldn't eat. I'm not the typical thin crohnie that everyone expects.

Ugh. Totally understand! Can't seem to get off the pred weight no matter what I do :( I gained 10 lbs!!! I can't wait until its gone and I have my body back!

well since august I have lost 17 pounds. Went from a size 8 jeans to now a 4 ( us sizes). I was not someone who you would consider heavy before I started loosing weight, and now I am pretty skinny and to everyone "I look great". I am currently loosing about a pound a week. I am in a bad flare for the last 6 months and I am not on any meds due to no insurance. My disease is rampant in my small bowel and also in my large one. I do agree that its due to not absorbing nutrients in my food.. hence the crazy anemia and weakness. The being skinny is about the only semi ok thing with this disease...but I would trade the skinny jeans for a mom muffin top in a heartbeat if it meant I was pain/symptom free! I am also 5'8" so that also makes me look super skinny. My husband says.. ya you look great but its not doing me any good because your so sick.. and quite frankly having a sexy hot wife that is not healthy is not worth it. at least the muffin top mom/wife put out! ha ha just joking..

Well I've got CD right the way through my small and large intestine and I've lost a total of six and a half stone in about a year (I was overweight). How much of that is due to the disease directly and how much is through not feeling like eating (pain, feeling full all the time etc) I don't know.

Whilst on Pred I haven't put any weight on, but haven't lost any either.

My weight goes through phases, I have clothing in about three different sizes - steroids make me heavy, flare ups make me bone thin, and (I remember a long time ago) I was my normal size!

it seems like forever since i was able to keep anything in my system for longer than an hour, but i don't lose any weight. :( the only thing i've managed to lose is my mind! (tee hee)

I have been on both sides of this. I have gained from pred, and lost during really terrible flairs. I have clothes that go from a size zero to a size six, and I have used all of them this year! Only a few months ago, I was busting out of my size six jeans, and now I am between a 2 and a 4. I'm not flaring right now, I just had surgery so I think that just took a lot out of me. This disease effects us all so differently!

Thanks for the replies i don't feel so bad now.

Thoght i was the only one who wasn't losing weight?

I know being hypothyroid dosn't help but the amount i squirt out daily i should be a twig instead i am a big trunk.

Love Dawn xx

I'm a fat crohnie. It took me quite a while to realize that's what docs and nurses were referring to with their comments of "Oh, you sure don't look like you have Crohn's. You look so healthy." LOL

I'll lose a few pounds during a flare due to simply not eating but always gain those pounds right back again.

I am a skinny crohnie. Lost 4 stone prior to diagnosis - was 10 and half stone at 5 ft 6 - now 6 and a half. Not put any weight on with pred either. Really want to be a bit fatter - all my friends laugh when I say this. They have stopped saying they wish they could lose weight when I am around.
My husband says he is going to share the bed with his new bike as it has more fat on it!!
I might try a bicycle pump!

I agree with what rebecca said way up there in that it all depends where the disease is.

In april (2010) I lost about 15 to 20 lbs in 2 weeks and that was a combo of not eating and diarrhea when I did. Ive gained that weight back now since october and remicade and actually up 4 pounds. Im 5'10 and 154lbs. Doc wants me at 160 haha.

For me, I really have only lost weight when flaring, but I'm a pretty thin guy to begin with.

From what I understand, it depends on the individual and your symptoms. There are lots of factors I've read about, but for me, I lose all appetite when I flare and food=pain in my head, so I eat very little. Everyone yells at me, and I don't recommend that approach, but it just kind of happens for me.

Before going to the GI this most recent flare, I had lost 10lbs in two weeks, but since going on pred, I'm up 15. I know it's only five pounds, but I can say I gained weight this time. ;)

I'm having a related problem at the moment. I am actually gaining weight way too fast. At my illest, in April/May, I weighed 50kg. My 'usual' weight is more like 53kg. This morning I weighed in at 59kg. So thats 9kg (20lb or 1 1/2 stone) in 7 months! My eating habits have not changed that much, I am assuming it is because I am absorbing my food better now that the Crohn's is under control. I believe I have had the disease for most, if not all, of my life, and it was diagnosed as lactose intolerance/ milk allergy (through a doctor supervised elimination diet). So for most of my life I have eaten as much as I wanted and still was bordering on being underweight. So now I guess I have to teach myself portion sizes!

during my first flare i lost about 40 pounds, my mother thought i looked like someone who just left a concentration camp. i was 200 and now im down to 160. so i dont think its that bad

i lost 2 stone during the summer...dropped to under 9 and a half stone.. havent being that weight since 12 or 13..hahaha...i have managed 2 put on a stone so im a little bit healthier 10 and a half stone!!

I lost weight during one of my flares before I was diagnosed, but since being on pred I can't lose anything. I have 10 lbs hanging on from baby #1 and 10 lbs hanging on from baby #2. I've tried exercising, but it hasn't helped.

I am 25 yr old and off prednisone for 4 months,I gained 30 lbs which I ca'nt get off does anyone have a good diet plan or any suggestion how i can lose the weight(not through a flare which is the only way i ever lost weight)but don't forget fruits and veggies is not an option cuz' it nakes me feel horrific......
please post your suggestions!!!!!

I am hoping to lose my weight simply by eating less and exercising more. Like you, I can't tolerate many veggies. So I'm going to cook more meals from scratch and stick to the serving size it says. If I find I'm still hungry, I will have to have a low cal pud or a safe snack. As for the exercise, I have a 15 minute workout dvd. So I will start on the easiest workout 3 times a week and work my way up from there. I will also try to take the dog on longer walks on the days I don't do the dvd.

I used to run before I was unwell. I hope to return if I ever feel better as it boosts the immune system, produces natural steroids and will be great for preventing osteoporosis as it is a weight bearing exercise. It used to give me 'me' time as well !!
If... :-(

My 'handle' when I signed on to the forum was actually going to be "Plump Chump" but I got distracted by something, and somehow ended up as 'Glum Chump.' Anyways, the plump says it all...I'm not one of the skinny Crohn's people you read about :)

Im not a skinny one either, kinda sucks I was hoping science i got this yucckie disease that I would get that side effect :-(

I can't lose weight unless it's in a flare, then my personal record is 30 pound loss in one month. Rough way to do it, for sure!

does anybody know of Dr. bo's diet???He promises to lose 30Lbs in 30 days. I don't want to start this diet if it will make me sick. if anyone has any experience PLEASE POST!

The maximum reccommended fat loss you can achieve safely is 2-3 lbs/week . You can get an additional 4 - 11 lbs off you initially by altering the amount of water you carry. This is done through water/sodium/potassium manipulation.
