Hi All,

I've posted a few times about abscesses and fistula... I recently went in for an 11 day hospital stay to try and IV antibiotic called meropenum (not sure of spelling). So after things not really responding we decided on a temp. loop ileostomy, thus Angus the anus! Surgery was done day 9 and they let me out on the 11 day. Yay me!!! Recovery is going quite well but the adhesive is tearing my skin apart, what barrier wipes or sprays do you recommend? just tried coloplast but it stings. My silly skin is so sensitive.

I am sooo happy to not be scared for my next bowel movement :poop:!!! Abscesses are horrible!

Thanks,
Jen

Welcome to the ostomy club! It's great to hear that you are recovering well. :thumright:

I can't help with barrier wipes or sprays because I don't use any, but I had to try a number of different brands of stoma bags before I found one with an adhesive that didn't irritate my skin. There seems to be quite a lot of variation in the types of adhesive - which is good because of the different reactions people have. The manufacturers/agents are very willing to send you samples if you call or email them.

Currently I am using the ReliaMed Sting-free Protective Barrier Wipes. I've tried a few other brands, and while they may have given a tad better protection and or stick factor, these do not sting my skin.

I do like using the barrier wipes. I think they really help to prevent my skin from reacting to the adhesive. I am allergic to several adhesives in Band-Aids and surgical tape, but with the barrier wipes and the Coloplast bags, I am doing okay.

Welcome! I use the cavillon spray, and it works great for me. Like alot of us, you may have alot of trial and error to find a bag with an adhesive that works for you. Susan is right, ring the manufacturers direct for samples.

Do you have a stoma nurse?

yes but she's away till after thanksgiving and she accidentally took my folder with all the manufacturers info of course, LOL!
I will try searching the websites.

Thanks to those who throw me some brand names to go by! And thanks for the welcome!

I don't have stoma, but the name Angus caught my eye and tickled my fancy. I have visions of him in a little kilt with a mini set of bagpipes :rof: Really hoping that he helps you get rid of the vile abscesses once and for all.

I am not sure about Canada, but heres a start:
Convatec
Coloplast
Holister
Salts
Dansac

Thats a good group to try!

I use the 3m cavilling wipes, they don't sting and are easy to carry in emergency kit. I had a great time trying out samples from the manufacturers, couldn't believe how quick they arrived. Most companies sent them airmail and they were delivered the day after I submitted request on Internet.

My Miss Piggy is a bit tricky, so have been trying different seals and bags. I just get my routine right and she goes and shrinks so I have to start all over again. We have just dropped to 25cm so I hope she's nearly done shrinking.

Good luck.

Thx janice. Angus keeps shrinking too, he's down to 25mm too! Looks like he's going to be wee just like me! My skin is a mess from the shrinking but the barrier wipes have been helping a lot with the rest. All the best to you! Thanks for everyones responses!
