Hi all! Havent been around much since we left in December on our cruise i was telling ya all about. I stayed on the 10mgs of pred while we away the whole time. Felt great, no issues. Had my scope done on Jan 17. For those who dont know me- i also have this crazy big hernia going on and was recently diagnosed with Crohns on Aug 10. my old dr who did the aug 10 diagnosis said it was "severe" and prescribed pred and imuran. i never started the imuran because i nwas scared to death of the side effects and changed drs to get a second opinion. this brings us up to date to my scope with new dr on Jan 17. Got my results on Feb 2. New dr says "mild crohns disease" and he does not feel i need any type of Imuran type drugs. He thinks my hernia is a mess and causing the incredible pain. now, the thing i am wondering is- this august dr said "severe" ive now been on pred for 8 months, is it the pred that did alot of healing hence the new diagnosis of "mild" i asked him this and he has now ordered my pathology slides etc from the previous dr to see what she was looking at during the aug scope. my other thing is that everytime i taper lower than 10mgs, i can tell my pain increases. this week i am at 7.5 and somewhat ok. my new dr suggested that when i get off this pred i start a drug he will prescribe called Budesonide (sp?) or called Entocort. what do you guys think?? i have gained 70 lbs on pred since august and can not get my hernia fixed till i lose the weight. pls give me the scoop on this Budesonide. Does it have nasty long term effects like Pred. Pls tell me everything ya know. Do ppl with Crohns ever just take this forever with no aza? he said "the degree of crohns dpoes not warrant any AZA at all". i was relieved but cant help wonder if its just because ive had 8 months of pred. i guess the full picture will be revealed when he sees the pathology slides from august and sees what the first dr based her opinion on. the aug pathology slides were taken when i was on NO meds and just getting diagnosed. so thats whats haoppening here. missed you all.

I think 8 months of pred would've enough to lower the inflammation from severe to mild. However, pred is not a long term solution (and neither is entocort) because steroids can have nasty side effects when you stay on them too long.

Obviously, I'm not a doctor, but I think it would be worth looking into another med (maybe a 5-asa if you don't want to try Imuran yet) to hopefully allow you to stop taking the pred without symptoms coming back.

Glad you had a great trip! I agree with Rebecca, pred can make you feel good but scopes and long term don't benefit from it. I havent travelled far in over 10 years but I am next Sept and I am going to take some pred, dont care, just want to enjoy my trip~!
