went to see the dietitian today

she didnt realy say much..although she was very friendly. gave me a leaflet on things to help. although i find it abit strange putting milk powder into milk though.. why do they suggest this?

in a way i was dissapointed because she really jsut told me what i knew about eating. but she did suggest drinking plenty of milk (full fat.. although i cant stand the stuff so im having semi skimmed)

got to go back in 2 months. she said that as my weight is steady i should focus on keeping it steady.. not trying to put on weight as the consultant told me to do.

although.. i dont know what i am going to do in college cos ive been told to eat something atleast every hour and to drink plenty of milky drinks. but in class we can only have water and no eating. when i do eat in class the people in my class go funny about it cos they get told off for it.

I was told to do this when I was underweight too. Milk powder is just a quick, inexpensive way to add calories. You can add it to mashed potatoes too.

How long are your classes? Maybe you could eat a little in between classes... I don't remember if you are still in high school or not, but if you are you could eat a little on the way to each class or at your locker or something... maybe take bathroom breaks to eat a little.

my classes are an hour and half. and i have four a day. im in college. yeh i could always ask to go the toilet and then go the shop or summat.

ahh right i didnt know milk powder had calories ( feel bit stupid now) i know so little lol.

drinking all the milks bit annoying though.. but if it will make me gain weight then i must do it :)

xx

maybe you get a doctors note for the colege? it should be allowed to eat on medical grounds. if your diabetic then you have to carry sugar bars with you. regards sharon x

In my opinion, drinking milk when you have Crohn's is like taking a probiotic with bad bacteria in it. There have been many studies that suggest a link between the Mycobacterium avium subspecies Paratuberculosis and Crohn's. The bacteria is often present in milk. It is not proven as of yet, but I think it will be in the not too distant future.

Maybe you should make your dietician aware of this. They may have a better replacement food you could eat.

i thought when she told me that i have been told on here milk can be bad when having a flare or feeling ill. i think its becasue of the fat content that shes tld me to drink a pint of milk per day as wella s milk powder and loss of cheese. although i cant eat much cheese as it makes me feel ill. yeh i am.. i can only eat if i feel hungry.. wihich sometimes isnt alot and if i dont eat there and then then the hunger will pass and then i wont feel hungry for a while.

i doctors note might work. i will speak to them and if they require one i will get one.

the dietitian was very nice..although i again sort of feel asthough they are more interested in me putting weight on/ keeping it stable than helping me with nausea/ stoamche aches and my feeling generally unwell. although she did mention eating ginger biscuts and drinking peppermint tea.

i still havnt officailly been diagnosed with crohns. my doctor is sure that its IBD or Crohns i have all the symptoms for it ( well most) but my tets are coming back fine. but i have read that many people on here have had tests coming back looking fine

Well, if you are sure that milk and milk products are bothering you, then stay away from them. Perhaps there is a substitute?

Sometimes it's difficult (when your innards are all out of whack) to know exactly which foods bother you. Basically it's trial and error. It wasn't until I was getting better that I tried removing lactose from my diet.

Hopefully you and the people helping you get everything sorted out soon.

hopefully. when iw as younger i couldnt tolerate full fat milk. we will soon find out if milk is bothering me now ive got to drink atleast a pint of it a day for the next 3 months. when iw as very ill when i first started to feel ill, i couldnt stand milk.. or go any where near it.

did you notice a big difference when you removed lactose from your diet?

You could always request a lactose test.

Myself, no, I never had one. Sometimes you just subconsciously avoid certain things and that's how it happened. Milk bothers me -- I can tell immediately because I get a sharp little pain "higher up" from the general throb lower down. Yogurt and cheese not so much. Now I use soy milk.

Funny though, at the time, I'd down copious amounts of moo juice and milkshakes and found some relief just because it had a soothing, chalky consistency to it. But then I got real stinky "sour" squirty poops afterwards. But when your insides are all a mess it's hard to know what's causing what.

yeh.. i dont really know what sbothering my stomach.. im getting a cosntant sore tummy and pains.. they arnt always sharp.. some are like dull pains ( ithink thats what ya call them) and when i go the toilet it really smells and can be a mix of D or constipation. which confuses me alot.

how is a lactose test done?

From what I understand, it's a breath test. You fast first, then they give you something to drink containing lactose, then you blow into a device and they measure it. I think they take some blood too.

ahh thats not bad then :)

i will request that when i see the consultant in a few weeks. aslong as it is the consulatnt i want to see it should be fine. if i get the other one then ive got no chance of having any tests done

Some alternatives to milk that you could try are peanut butter and protein powder. I mixed peanut butter with smoothies and applesauce, and i put protein powder in EVERYTHING.

Can you request a certain consultant? You should make sure that they will give you the tests that you need. Make a big fuss until they give in!

Well, a Lactose Test might be way down the list of priorities as far as a doctor treating you is concerned. Especially if they're fishing for an official Crohn's diagnosis.

Have you tried lactose-free milk?

I drank full fat milk as a kid and now can't tolerate a glass of any kind of milk. It might be bothering you because your intestines are already irritated even if you truly aren't lactose intolerant.

Teeny... me too. I drank full fat, vitamin D milk... now what little I use is 2% and only in cooking or the occasional bowl of cereal. I never DRINK milk as a drink.

The reason you were specifically told milk powder is because it's basically the same thing as protein supplements. Milk is made of 2 different proteins. Whey and Casein. Protein supplements are concentrated Whey. Milk powder is a lot cheaper and just as good really.

Yes I have but not to drink a glass of, put it in my cereal but now I drink Rice milk but it is enriched. Just more convienent.
I mean to try the rice milk one of these days. I see it in the grocery store next to the soy -- same price really. It's just that soy has been such a reliable staple for so long for me, I've never bothered.

Almond milk is supposedly really creamy -- good for cereal. Again, just haven't thought to pick it up when I am in the Dairy aisle.

i think im going to go back to skimmed milk..or none at all. my first day of college today and i feel really ill. feel sick, heaving, got a headache and cant stop running to the toilet!

i dont know weather its nerves cos i know my classes are no where near any toilets so im stuffed if i suddenly have to go. i dontlike being ill in places that are out of my comfort zone so i get panicked

Its real easy to blame milk, I'm not saying its a not a problem for you but keeping a food diary will help you get to the bottom of it.

Sounds like me, I say I want something but when faced with having to do something to get it I say no :)

i dont want to call in sick cos my boss is mean. she doesnt like me.. ever since i told her im ill. ive got 2 jobs and full time college. my parents sort of undertsand.. they dont undertsand jsut how bad i feel and how tired i am. i wish my brother could understand how i feel ( i dotn mean that i want him to get ill) but he is quite a selfish person he does nothing but watch tv or play on his computer or go out with friends to get drunk. im dreading working tonight i just want to cry

i think they think its all in my head.. i wanna scream at them that it isnt all in my head and that my symptoms are real and is causing me alot of discomfort and pain.

thank you Pen :)

haha Isla i can sometimes be like that.. like if i want some biscuts but it means walking the shop then ill be like stuff the biscuts :)
