Before I was diagnosed my gp sent me off to get some immodium for the d's. Apparently immodium is a no no no for crohns. And then I was taking ibuprofen for all the pain, apparently thats a no no no as well.

Now Ive got a urinary infection which Im taking some ural for. Its just my luck that ural is on the no no no list as well.

UTIs - yuk! We don't have Ural here, but we've got something similar! Just can't remember what it's called at the mo. Can I ask where you found your no no list? Could be useful.
Keep an eye
on that UTI. The sachets relieve the symptoms but you might need antibiotics to clear the infection.

Indeed an antibiotic may be best for a UTI. Those are terrible, sorry to hear it. :( Yes apparently NSAIDs are bad for crohn's (I still take Advil though, shhh, don't tell anyone :p). Imodium isn't horrible but may be masking symptoms which isn't a good thing. My GI prescribed Lomotil for diarrhea which is apparently a stronger version of Imodium. Can't really think of any other no nos. Anything you ingest depends on the person. My personal no no is don't go off your meds.

I agree with you crabbyrelish, my GI told me I should quit taking Advil and only take Tylenol. But sometimes Tylenol just won’t touch my body aches or my headaches and I still breakout the Advil bottle… so your secrets safe with me. :D

I was tod you can't take imodium or pepto or any of that if you have crohn's because it stops your bowels from moving, and if you have ulcers in your colon, which is my case, having the bm stay there can cause a serious infection. hope this makes sense to you

No NSAIDs! (Ibuprofen, Advil, aspirin, Aleve, some formulations of Excedrin, etc.)

Be careful with antibiotics. Avoid them if you can (although everyone should follow that rule). People with Crohn's are more susceptible to C. diff. When you take antibiotics (as you might need for your UTI) take a probiotic.

For a lot of people really high fiber is a "no no," e.g. popcorn.

Immodium is not a no no for Crohn's. it may be for you in particular, but I was actually encouraged to use it for "special occasions" that I wanted to be D-free. Just don't depend on it for daily use. Can't really think of any other no-nos. In regards to food everyone's different, but yeah no NSAIDS like others have said.

I had a UTI a few weeks ago and managed to cure it without Antibiotics just by resting and drinking enormous amounts of water! Depends how bad it is, but you can usually flush it out with water alone. Or try cranberry juice or lemon barley juice as these help flush too!

Feel better soon!! :)

Hi missdD, i had uti once i was on cipro for a few weeks and alot cranberry juice and lots of water. but for the no no's at the bottom of this page there is a site where you can download a pdf file Crohn's Disease Diet it's by Dr dahlman.com/Crohn's-diet. just click it and give them you email address and they will send you the pdf file it's free. make sure you have adobe reader. i did it and it has remarkable information. Best wishes

I have NSAID's for period pain, every 7th week that I am on. I take maybe 3 or 4 over the whole week and notice no increase in symptoms. So for me, occasional use is ok, though I did stop taking them for everyday use.

And as for immodium, sometimes it is just not possible not to take anything to stop the D. Sometimes you have to leave the house/ work what ever. Certainly don't take them as a habit but occasional use is fine.

It really does depend on yourself and what you are happy with. Some people are quite strict in not taking a single pill and others take alot. It's about finding what you are comfortable with.

I take immodium for nights out. In fact, I was having a rough day Saturday and had a date night with the hubby, so I took one.

I was told not to take NSAIDS because they're extremely hard on the GI tract and will increase or cause more bleeding. I just stay away from them all together now

never knew about NSAIDS
I always thought Asacol and Sulfasalazine were suped up NSAIDS turns out there for people who can't tolerate NSAIDS. Learn something new everyday.

YOU DON'T WANNA TAKE NSAIDS! My doc told me not to take them because they can cause a flare or make the flare worse! I didn't know this before I had surgery, I was taking them every day for pain and they think that is why my body made a fissula. immodium isnt bad. If you have ibs like i do that is something they like to try you on. I wouldnt get to carried away with it because it can clog you up.

I've been using Immodium for years. But you have to find a dosage that gives you a bit of freedom but doesn't stop things altogether.

There are reasons for Crohnies to take immodium! It was prescribed for me. When you are running pure big D for ages..yeah, immodium in small doses slows you down. And that aint a bad thing! If you have a mixture of big D and constipation, no its not a good thing. But big D can cause you all sorts of problems.

If you are taking ibruprofen to ease your pain in the gut..you shouldnt. Paracetamol (tylenol) is better for that. After my surgery, I was sent home with (as a prescription) Immodium, Paracetamol, Ibuprofen (stoma pain), and codeine.

So it depends on your symtoms if its a NO, NO, NO or not!!

I used to take Immodium daily, bad I know! I take it occasionally now, only when I have the D that doesn't stop. I take it to avoid irritating my hemi's by having too much fiery D. I've never had a problem with constipation though. My little sis has D and C alternately, if she takes immodium she can be stopped up for 3 weeks. She doesn't have a dx, but I'm pretty sure she has IBD.

Aspirin and NSAIDS rip my guts up. I to take an advil once or twice a year if I have severe lower back pain. Tylenol just doesn't touch it.

Immodium isn't great because you don't want poop sitting in your already diseased bowels all day. NSAIDS aren't good, because NSAIDS make you bleed. If you have intestinal ulcers or whatever, they might bleed more.

I still take both XD

Certainly doesn't stop me going, just gives me a semblance of freedom. Think I'd go stir crazy without it tbh.

I think with Lopermide, it is a balancing act. Is it going to constipate you (personally I have had 4-6 on the odd very bad day and gone as usual the next morning), what harm will come if you let the D carry on (dehydration etc) and why are you taking it (again personally at home only if it is very, very severe, otherwise I let it run it's course. If I am out and have an attack I have to or if I need to go out and things are dodgy I have too).

It's all very well some Drs saying not to take it, but they don't really get it. You may have an accident while out otherwise, or not be able to leave the house at all! A person can't live like that all of the time.

As long as people are sparing with the use and only in appropriate situations I see no harm honestly.

That makes perfect sense.
what's annoying about NSAIDS is for all other inflammation issues that go along with crohn's the first that the first thing they tell you to take.

Aside from meds, some big NO NOs that are fairly universal (although everybody is different) are, in order of severity (in my opinion):

popcorn
peanuts
spicy foods
alcohol
stress, physical or emotional

There are more things but the five above seem to be a trigger for nearly everybody, while others are less universal.
