I haven't ate anything for about 2-3 months besides broth, jello and water. I finally have a little of an appetite but an scared to eat because i'm not sure if it will start the pain and suffering all over again. I found this great taste no pain diet for crohns on the internet has anyone ever tried it? Can anyone give me advice on what to eat. I'm so scared anything i eat will just get stuck inside my stomach or intestines.

My Husband just got out of the hospital this past Friday. He is able to tolerate water boiled with chicken bullion cubes a few noodles and very shredded chicken and tuna plain with saltines. I looked up recipes for low fiber/low residue.. Hope this helps!

Personally, I'd be a bit suspicious of "cures" marketed over the internet. There's no such thing as an universal panacea for Crohn's. No two sufferers are alike.

Have you looked into liquid nutritional meal replacements such as Ensure or Boost?

Key is to take it all in moderation. Bananas, rice, applesauce, plain white toast. Think soft, bland and easy to digest.

I'd try to stay with a liquid diet for a while. If you were to eat solid foods though, definitely stay with easily digestable foods like eggs, bananas, etc. I would try to stay away from grains as they are a common irritant. Low residue is key. Definitely watch the sugar intake as well!

I echo this and digestive enzymes may help you too. Chew well and eat smaller meals more often during the day. I hear you on the obstructions, scary thing. Smoothies help too, invest in a blender. I love the strawberry ensure, and you can get high protein to sustain you more. Let us know how you do. Hugs.

when you feel ready to introduce something other than liquids into your diet, do it really slowly & gently, and in tiny amounts. also, only bring one new food into your day, so if it's going to upset you, you'll know exactly which food the culprit is.

i'd think of it as weaning a baby... start off with things which are more mushy than anything (i know that sounds gross but it's a good way to wean your tummy back onto real food)... things like soft mashed potato, soft scrambled eggs, very thin light bread with cream cheese on, yoghurts (no bits).. and take it from there. if you're ok on this kind of thing, then in a week or so introduce foods which need slightly more digesting such as shredded chicken, soft veggies (no hard bits or stalks).

completely avoid things like vegetable skins, fruit skins, nuts, popcorn, sweetcorn, pineapple, mushrooms - all these things don't get broken down in our systems and can cause us a lot of problems.

Hi Donna,

Pen has great advice about investing and a blender. Very helpful. Also, what dingbat said is right on the money. Work at introducing things one at a time so you know what you can or cannot tolerate. That's exactly what I had to do when my flaring was at its worst. I ended up with a list of foods that I could tolerate, but it took several months to figure out what is safe. Oddly enough, I found plain cheese pizza worked for me early on, but that doesn't work for most crohnnies in a flare.

Here is a link that I go back to all the time which is pretty helpful: http://www.healthcastle.com/ibd-diet.shtml

This site also has a link to low residue diet which is probably where you should start.

My father was diagnosed about a 2years ago but my mother was dying of Alzheimer's Disease and he refused to let his pain show and take center stage I can't stand to watch him hurting, he has suffered to much please what is the name of the cook book you found I've been looking for my father so I can help him find something to eat without hurting. Has it helped you?

hi there, welcome to the forum.

i am so sorry to hear about your mum, and your dad's suffering..

would you like to post your father's story in our Your Story section? that way, your post will get noticed by all our members and hopefully you'll receive some advice and support.

personally i don't know of any particular cook books or set diet plans for Crohn's, but most of us have adapted our diets to suit our symptoms and reactions to foods, so we do have experiences we can share. also, if you do a search here on diet, you will find lots of threads on this topic.

i tried the book, didn't work. it was all fibrous foods that made me feel worse and i think i started way too fast. i went back to yogurt, tried ensure (my favorite is the chocolate) and recently i've started like white rice and chicken.

You say that this was a diet made for Crohn's? (insoluble)Fibre is one of the cardinal sins for us!

This is why I don't read. :p

Look up BRAT (bananas, rice, apple sauce and toast) food. It's what you eat during a stomach flu. Also steamed chicken breast, if you don't over steam it can be tasty. It what i eat during gastritis episodes. I think yogurt makes everything better but i kept getting warned that that might turn on me.

Im guessing when going for a colonoscopy they recommend the easiest foods to digest .. if so try their meals

I could have bovril, potato (without skin) cheese, butter, boiled chicken

What can I eat

I don't have Crohns but I had Ulcerative Colitis and after they removed my colon, I was on a clear liquid diet for about a week, then a regular liquid diet, then eventually solid foods. I was eating solid foods before leaving the hospital and food tasted very strange at first cause I hadn't had anything solid in over a month, 2 and a half weeks sick in bed with no food or water, then only surviving on IV fluids before surgery, then after I was introduced slowly to food.

To keep strength up and get my nutrients up they gave me ensure, take things slow, do a liquid diet at first, then try other stuff. If you have an ostomy, the one thing that is important is to chew, chew, chew & drink lots of fluids so it goes through the bag & keeps you hydrated.
