Hey all. I had surgery 6 1/2 years ago and since then I have been on cholestyramine powder and it has always worked really well for me except for some bloating.
I was using it every 2-3 days as needed until recently. Now I am having to use it almost daily to keep the diarrhea settled.
I don't know why it's changed all of a sudden...Flare up?
But was wondering what you all are taking for your diarrhea for options for myself to try... My doctor suggested calcium polycarbophil which is found in most fiber pills for constipation but he says it will work for both...I have not tried this yet.
Thanks :)

i go for immodium. no script needed, says to take up to 8 tablets a day, but i just have one each morning and i only end up pooping once all day at work instead of about 8 times:)

nothing I've been on has helped much, but I've tried Loperamide (Imodium), Bentyl, and Lonox...I still run laps to the bathroom all day and night though, for 9 months I've only seen improvement a couple brief times and never from any anit-diarrheals.

I haven't ever gotten good results with Imodium either. I am currently drinking the cholestyramine powder EVERYDAY now. Ugh!!
My Doctor told me to try "calcium polycarbophil" BUT it's in meds like FiberCon and things like that...which is a laxative!!! I'm not quite understanding why he put me on this to prevent diarrhea and bloating!?
I've also noticed lately that when I go it is about 90% mucus? Anyone else have that prob? And does anyone know the reason for it?
Thanks guys...& girls!

Well if it's a fiber substance then it should cause binding. Fiber holds things together and without it you just get liquid. Hope that helps

It might be that your body isn't absorbing fat properly. I have that problem and try to eat fat-free everything, except peanut butter (monounsaturated fat I can tolerate.)

I take Imodium and get it by prescription so it's covered...

BUT i jumped in here to say...

TONYA!

I have missed you!!!!

Hope all is well and you are just busy. :)

The only medication that helps me day to day with the big D is codeine - it relieves the pain and slow my bowels down enough to let me go out of the house !!

As a maintainance kind of med I take co-codamol usually 2 a day - when things are getting worse I take cedeine phosphate instead as it is a stronger dose.

I always found that diarhoea medication (imodium e.t.c) made me nauseous.

The mucous is from the inflammation, it's a protective element to the intestines, in a healthy colon/small bowel, it's there to help parastalsys (sp?) and digestion, but when things go off track with IBD or other issues, it can shed off and excrete with the feces due to the inflammation. I've had it at times. I believe what I just said is correct, but if not someone have no haste to correct it.

Hi Tonya, sorry to hear you're suffering with the big D, haven't chatted to you for a while, hope everything else is well with you. Anyway, I'm the same as Fruitloop, must be a common drug over here in the UK, but I too take codeine phospate for D and it works a lot better than Imodium. As far as the mucous goes, I get that quite often, even when I'm not flaring. Drop me a line, we must catch up!!! take care x
