This is vague but what should I expect or be prepared for going to my first surgery. I am having 8 inches of small intestine removed.

If you have it laproscopically you are going to heal alot faster and on your feet sooner. If you have the option for pain control as for an epidural, it freezes your area that is hurting. Dont try to eat too much too fast. The intestines are very thin and take awhile to heal. I have had almost 2ft total removed. You will get D but you can ask for Questran. Also get your doc to check your B12 levels too.

Hopefully he will put you something after, the newest fad now is 2 weeks of Flagyl to kill off any infection. Probiotics help and I would advise you use Digestive enzymes, it helps break down food and absorb nutrients.

What is your main concern? :hang: When is your surgery?

I am 11 days post open resection and ileosigmoid fistula repair. I experienced a lot of pain initially and actually felt better once I got off narcotics on day 3. I walked on the second day, and increased it every day. By the time I left the hospital on day 5, I had little pain.

Expect to wake up with a catheter which did not give me a moment of discomfort. Most people do not have an NG tube. Expect to be on clear liquids, progressing to a soft diet which happened to me on day 3 when I had my first bowel movement.

I had headaches from the narcotic and a wickedly dry mouth which was my most annoying symptom. Expect super stinging herparin shots every 8 hours given in your belly. Ask for an ice pack before and after the shots. Expect these lower leg wraps that expand and deflate to prevent clots.

That is all I can think of now.

I cannot sleep with those damn chokers on my leg. I am going to take the shots but try walking around because I can't have that on me.

Open resection and day 3 soft food wow. When do you go to regular?

I got the leg chokers off around day 4 because I was walking often. I tried to convince the docs that I didn't need the heparin shots but that was a non starter!

I started eating a modified regular diet at about 10 days. I am transitioning to vegetables that are cooked soft, but still avoiding the gassy ones.
