whats for dinner?

I am having a hard time with dinner. If I eat a normal size meal I feel like I need to throw up afterwards. I have been tryign to eat smaller meals but then I get hungry or wake up starving. Also almost everything I eat for dinner gives me horrible gas & bloating. So my question is what do you eat for dinner??

Hi Becky! Keep on nibbling. There is no rule again having 6 or even 8 small meals, or otherwise spacing your eating out during the day. Re. your question, I have been on an eggs and (low fat) ham kick lately. I find eggs are quite gentle, and for whatever reason ham seems to go down well, too. Rice and potatoes are also gentle, although I have read that some say they can be difficult w/ gas and bloating. Salmon, yogurt and cheese, peanut butter can work for people getting gas & bloating, although of the items on that list I find only salmon works well if I'm also having stomach pain. Keep experimenting (and feel better soon!).

Hiya Becky

sorry you're having a bad time
when I'm rough I have salmon and new potatoes and white bread
or roast chicken and rice, or roast turkey and potatoes, baked potato with cheese, and plain biscuits with tea, graze and pick thro the day instead of 3 big meals, I just stick to these and it helps, no veg or fruit except banana, lots of water, and at bedtime I have cereal, that's it! boring!
but it staves off nausea and the big D, no gas or bloat, and it works!
hope you feel better soon
xxxx

Just remembered: I learned a little while back that eating slowly, chewing for a long time, and trying not to take in extra air (such as drinking through a straw) can help prevent some of the gas & bloating. I try to make a regular size meal stretch out for 20-30 minutes.

chicken and fish(yuck) seem to be the easiest on my stomach. Especially with this flare up.
Although sometimes I can eat one thing one night and be fine...the next time I eat it, however, I am in the bathroom for a round of belly aches.

I am not a big meat eater anyways so I will stick to chicken. I do not like seafood.
I do need to eat slower. With 2 little boys I rarely get to enjoy my dinner!

Also, if you are eating veggies that may be the culprit for some extra gas. Make sure you're overcook them so they are super soft. I know it's not always appetizing to eat mushy veggies, but the extra cooking time helps to break down that fiber matrix which tends to cause us problems. :)

When I find I can't eat anything else, I can usually make do with instant potatos. Not exactly nutritious, but they fill me up and never bother my tummy. Other steadfasts that never upset my tummy are white toast with butter, salmon and kraft dinner.

Ditto on the instant potatoes, otherwise white rice with a little butter and salt, cereal, toast... Plain stuff in other words. And its difficult, especially with little ones, to get to take the time to sit and slowly enjoy a meal. I thought of that last night as I scarfed down a PBJ over the sink, between errands/meetings and other stuff!
Generally for me, lunch is my biggest meal, as I can usually sit down and enjoy it. Otherwise, I have breakfast, small late AM snack, lunch, occasionally a late afternoon snack (if I didn't get enough lunch) and a small dinner.

Agreed with the plain stuff (white rice, steamed veggies etc). Eat slowly and chew your food longer as well. Keep drinking fluids as well.

Becky have you talked to the doctor about it? I went in today and the nurse did the standard interview of questons and included was, do you easily feel full and do you have gas and bloating. So maybe you need to get checked out. Good luck!

Dr does always ask if I have gas/bloating and i always say yes. I go back in a few weeks so I will talk to him more about it.

I agree with potatoes, rice, small meals, but I was wondering if you're symptoms worse at night? Mine seem to get worse through the day as I eat small meals. Then by bedtime I'm always in pain, and don't know how to fix this. Thanks for anyone's feedback....

Yes mine get worse at night. That is why I was thinking it was related to dinner. It isnt unbearable pain just uncomforable.

I like spinach and it doesn't bother me as much as some other foods. i'm naughty during a bad flare-up! as they usually consist of severe pain diorhea and bleeding I tend not to have anything to eat at all during the day apart from the odd biscuit that way I can relax about being stuck in the bathroom all day or end up having an embarrasing accident. big dinner at night gives me what i need but it means I'm in pain on the toilet throughout the night and first thing in the morning.

Those of you who find you are in pain by the evenings, I used to have this too, but then the doc suggested I try a low res diet and it's really helped. I think that rather than there being a food which aggravates your symptoms straight off, there must be a build up of undigestible food in your intestines which then causes the bloating and gas etc.

It may have been mentioned, but taking a probiotic seemed to help restore balance in my gut and helps a lot with the bloating and gas I had. I've taken it for a year now. Align is the best. But when money is tight I get the Phillips Colon Health here in the US. Also, the carby, comfort foods mentioned all seem to help not rock the boat too much. Grilled fish and chicken or a brisket sandwich go down well. However, since you are not much of a meat eater, maybe baked potatoes or a brothy soup? As a few of you mentioned, my pain was always worse at night prior to my resection. I think it is a build up of undigested food that is breaking down and causing the gas and bloating. That is where getting the inflammation down with meds and trying a good probiotic might help. Good luck with finding supper ideas.

I really don't know if my advice is suitable, but I have managed to add 4 stones of weight/muscle/mass on in the last couple of years.

I take a slow digesting protein before bed, Miscillar casein protein(sp?), it's not the nicest tasting protein but it's good for night time hunger!

In your small meals, do you have a variety of protein, carbs and good fats in each meal?

I didnt notice a difference while taking probiotic.

my meals are not always balanced.
