I have been reading lately of alot of peoples tests and how they are scared or had one and had un unpleasant test. Which is your worst test, that you dread ever having again or scared to have done!

What I dread most is having a tube down my throat. So far, so good.

I think the test that would be impossible for me to do is somewhat innapropriate.....Just use your imagination with the male anatamy haha

scary tests

Defecogram - 3 people watch via xray while you go
Anal manometry - going for it next month
Colonascopy during inflamation

Definitely the colonoscopy when I am hurting. Don't relish giving stool or should I say soupy samples either.

Haha, when I saw the title of the thread the first thing I thought was "MCAT" but that's a test I don't have to worry about for another couple years. :p

Um, I'll come right out and say it. I'm not fond of the direct rectal exam. They haven't done it to me since I was a kid, but I'm still creeped out by the memory of the doctor sticking their finger up my butt when I was like, nine. Totally didn't see it coming. :puke_r:

I voted colonoscopy/ endoscope. But I think the worst test I have had to have was when I was first getting diagnosed. I was 12( maybe 13) years old and my mom came and told me they had to run one more test before I could be discharged from the hospital. It was called a barium enema. It was horrible. I was crying the whole time. It hurt, and they wanted me to get into all kinds of positions all the while having the thing that felt HUGE stuck in my butt pumping the barium in. It was the longest test ever. I hope I never have to go through that again! Colonoscopes are scary, I hate the prep( don't know anyone who would like it!) but since I'm sedated for the scopes and EGDs, the prep is defiantly the hardest part.

Yea rectal exams are not a walk in the park either. Its not just the discomfort and pain at times, I'm so embarrassed and self conscious during the whole exam. uGh

I was 12 when my first scope happened...I never even got a warning that they were going to be doing one until the doctor pulled out the scope...I had 3 different ones wide awake and even woke up in the middle of one and man it is not a pretty site when they are done...especially when inflammed so I totally feel with you on it.
My other tests I don't care for is CT Scan because oddly enough we just found out I am not allergic to the contrast but I am the saline solution so my viens feel on fire(always thought that was a normal thing but its not),I hate MRIs just for the sheer fact of the loud noise it makes and small bowel pull thru.Anyways in general I hate any test that involve IVs or needles as my viens are small, hard to find and always roll or collaspe which therefore results in blown veins and black and blue marks from my neck down to my fingertips and in my feet.

For myself, I wouldn't say MRI's are scary but they are the most uncomfortable... Drinking the two glasses of stuff beforehand, then spending 45 mins in the machine... and the noise! The contrast they inject near the end makes me so nauseous!! Both times, I had to press the emergency button to get out - I was going to be sick! Good thing I wasn't - what a mess that would have been.

I had a nuclear medicine scan once, that freaked me out a bit with all the warnings and radiation signs everywhere...

My NG tube experience was horrible... but that wasn't really a 'test'... more of a procedure I guess... *shudder* I almost got a PICC line once, but I was too scared.

Yea...I dreaded those NG tubes as well. Had them 2 times, they put them in because I couldn't drink the prep stuff for the colonoscope. But ugh...had the hardest time getting them in, it kept coming through my mouth..finally we got it down. Took a while to get it though. They told me I would get used to it and wouldnt even feel it there. LIE!!! I felt it the whole time it was in! I found myself not swallowing until I had to because each time, the feeling in my throat made me want to gag. Ugh...not fun.

Barium Meals SUCK just because you've got to keep drinking the stuff blargh! MRI's aren't as bad as that because you don't have to drink as much and you can put diluted juice in it.

Colonscopy, Endoscopy and NG Tube I've been knocked out whilst they've done it and I will always make sure I'm knocked out!!!lol

PICC line was a bit scary, I couldn't have sedation because it was a spur of the moment thing and I'd already eaten that morn so I was dreading just have local aneasthetic whilst they did it, but was FINE!
I was like a child how upset I was before then once it was done I was back on the ward smiling lol I blame the hormones!

MRI I had 2 last week on my abdomen. This is because I had to keep on holding my breath, which I struggled to do, and the prep gave me bad diarrhea.

i'm scared of the MRI on many counts - have never had one so far - but i've heard such horror stories about it, how closed in you are, the noise, how long it takes.... but the real reason i chickened out from having an MRI recently was that they couldn't guarantee i wouldn't have an allergic reaction to the contrast dyes i'd have to drink and have injected.

i also hated the barium enemas i had pre-surgery - the pain was awful, secondary was the loss of dignity. thank goodness they're behind me now (pun intentional lol).

umm one more, NG tubes - no way, No Way! not while i'm awake. last time they tried i freaked, and opted for the continual vomiting instead.

Never had an MRI either and I am not, unless the put me out. They tried to put a ng tube in and I said no. Chicken yes, but when you are in pain and not feeling good, who needs that added to it. ;)

I really think I'm too claustrophobic to have an MRI... and as I've got a metal hip I may thankfully be barred from that one. Anything that involves prep is bad as it just makes me feel so bad... but I'd have to say that the idea of an endoscopy scares me... I rather have it inserted in the end that doesn't have a gag reflex

Defecogram... I'll probably wake up in the middle of the night screaming about that one

MRI's there a breeze, I've had 20+ of them..its the contrast that you need to drink first that is the problem, its gross and it goes right thru you.

Colonoscopy and Sigmoidoscopy are the worst.. I hear people say they are sedated, I wish I was during mine boy I really hate them, I think I've had about 6 so far. The prep is the worst, gross stuff and like we really need to spend anymore time in the bathroom. It always starts a flare and takes months to recover.

I had an mri and fmri (mri to map out my brain, fmri to see which areas were active) done on my brain at uni (they paid me to do it!). It really wasn't that bad, though I didn't need a contrast for it. Personally, I would be scared of anything going down my throat as I have a strong gag reflex and emetophobia.

I would rather have a peg tube over an NG tube. I have had several while I am awake and once, I yanked it out as soon as they got it down my nose. Not recommended - hurts a lot but it was reflex. No looking forward to the 24 hour ph monitoring... but the worst part is when they insert the tube. Makes my eyes water - such a horrible feeling :( Not too fond of catheters either.. (bladder ones).
They're all a drag but if I have to... so be it. Would rather have them and suffer and not be treated than have them and no treatment...

I would rather drink a lot of stuff as opposed to the painful stuff.

Any NG tubes I HATE! The one after surgery...HATE! I jsut ask for more pain pills to sleep until they yank that sucker out....lol (no I don't, but I wish I could....)

None of the tests are my favorite by any means, but I find for the most part the preps are worse than the test itself. Oh, except the barium follow through, and not so much because of the barium itself, but those little pop-rock-y things the make you swallow...to put air into your stomach.... I have yet to keep those puppy down....

But for most of the other tests...my doc loves me...and usually gives me something to calm me down or put me under...so I am kinda spoiled that way....

The "Big Kahuna" of scariest tests for me was a full body PET scan. I was scared shit-less (believe it or not!) because of what I feared the results to be - this was prep before they removed a pleural tumor which they suspected might have metastisized. They unleashed this radioactive bright green liquid from a vaulted and locked container - shot me up and the scan lasted about an hour. I had to lie still for 15-20 minutes at a time in a tube. The test wasn't painful, but it seemed like an alien abduction in real-time.

Another related scary test was a needle biopsy to my lung. I had to be awake and alert while they did that one. They had me lying on my side moving in and out of CT scanner, holding still. And they warned me if I moved too quickly or without warning, they could accidentally puncture my lung. The biopsy itself was painful as hell, and did it ever have weird feelings and "sounds" that I could hear from the inside of my body.

The biopsy and PET scans were much worse than the surgery, largely because of my being afraid of the results. The biopsy was more painful than having the chest tube, a collapsed lung, and a catheter. Biopsies by far are the worst tests on the planet if you have to be awake. These tests make anything they test with my butt or gut seem like a walk in the park.

If I'm awake I don't like things stuck down my throat!! Don't like the feeling of not being able to breath.

The other end isn't so pleasant either but at least I can still breath!

Colonoscopy because of the horrid prep and because it was the most painful! I was under anesthesia but still was able to feel pain at certain points...must have been when they took 15 biopsies.

Colonoscopy/Endoscopy for me.

hate the prep for the Colonoscopy horrible stuff.

Endoscopy..despise the feeling of the camera goin down i found it very uncomfortable

Colonoscopy/balloon dilatation - you can see your insides bleeding as they inflate it, I haven't found that very reassuring and just a bit too "uncomfortable".

While the colonoscopy/endoscopy in itself isn't bad, the prep is horrible. I've never been so full in my life drinking that stuff. And thinking it's going to come right back up and knowing you have to keep it down...awful.

That said, anything involving barium is no picnic either. Last time I had to drink the barium it was really, really warm and I had to down it in ten minutes. It was so nasty.

Small bowel follow through for some reason. Drinking that barium when your sick is not easy, and it took me 5 hours of walking around the hospital for the barium to reach all the GI tract.

And Jetta, I had an MRI done and it was awesome. I'm not claustrophobic at all so that was easy. I was just so intrigued in how it works and I actually like the weird noises it makes.

The Lower gastrointestinal series (barium enema) BY FAR. Usually anything involving barium is bad news but this was the worst test I ever had. I was 9 years old and remember being held down by doctors and nurses (all telling me I'm doing great, almost done, you're ok) while I'm screaming and crying my eyes out. I've never felt so violated.

I get put under for scopes, otherwise that'd be up there on the list for me too.

Spinal Meylogram for my lousy back problem.

I must agree however, the crap they give you to drink before a colonoscopy is the worst....yuck!

Bone marrow biopsy - eeks!

For me, the colonoscopy isn't so bad. You are asleep. I usually hurt afterwards, but when is that new??

The sigmoidscopy is the one that makes me really pale. There is usually no prep, no sleepy medicine and lots of pain. I have had those three times. I would rather do prep for colonoscopy ten times than do one of those bad boys.

I'm trying to figure out which is worse to drink, barium for the CT or the magnesium citrate for the colonoscopy. I think the magnesium citrate is a little worse.

I had a CT yesterday and whilst I thought balloon dilatation was bad the side effects of the CT have been horrendous. The worst symphonic brass blow offs ever from hugely bloated stomach and vicious D still going strong 24 hours later. Large swollen hard lump at IV spot. The liquid I had to drink looked like water with dandruff suspended in it. Weep.

Okay, more than one.

1) Cystiscope. (spelling) on a guy it is the worse thing possible
2) NG tube. Nothing like the feeling of gagging the whole time its in.
3) The sound of a rubber glove snapping remind anyone of something. Or the words "drop your drawers"

my colonoscopy was terrible. after the procedure, when you have to pass the air in your bowels....yeah i couldnt get the air to pass and it was extremely painful...then the doctor came in and put on his gloves...you can guess what happens next...it wasnt pleasant at all.

the rest of the tests were nice and smooth. i was a little nervous about getting the iodine iv for the ct though.

Chris, I had air so bad one time that they had to do another colonoscopy to get rid of it. 2 in one day. Lala land was great.

oh wow, now i dont feel so bad...sorry, that must have been terrible. although a second scope would have been nice, at least i woulda been knocked out.

i guess really it wouldnt have been so bad had someone told me that there is a chance of that happening before hand. the doc and all the nurses told me its easy, no problem at all, go to sleep, wake up, go home...then when i wake up in pain they tell me there is a 50/50 chance of that happening lol, i was pretty pissed at them. but now i find it pretty funny, just another story.

What I hated was getting a colonoscopy while I had a stoma. Afterward I kept on having to burp my bag, and that's not an easy task when tripping out on Versed and Demerol.

Also, every time I have had a colonoscopy the doctors said I would fall asleep. Well, I've had 4 and a sigmoidoscopy and haven't fallen asleep in one. Fun times...

But the pill-cam was pretty scary too. GI said it would take 8 hours to course through me and it took 2½. They said that there may not be enough footage to get a proper reading, but luckily there was barely enough. Also the amount of pain it caused; I felt every little movement that thing made. Keep in mind this was a year after my surgery to reconnect my colon.

Upper GI Endoscopy wasn't too scary, but at the time I was more afraid of dying than of the tests.

Oh, yeah, well doctor sometimes think that nothing they do will really HURT. After all, THEY don't feel a thing. LOL!!

I'm fine with most procedures... I just hate anything dealing with barium. I just had a MR-E with barium and once I got the barium down I was fine... it was the glucagon push that I hated because it sorta created a panic attack, made me nauseous and then I threw up all the barium.

Good news... I didn't have to pass the barium the other way. lol

@ Mark LMFAO!

tap, tap, tap.................. are you done yet?................... argh, how much longer?..................this is killing me!!...............well what is it, positive or negative??................what do you meAN YOU DON'T KNOW!!!.............. I'm gonna go off the poll and say PREGNENCY... not me, just anyone i'm dating

Hahahaha!!!! The first thing I saw was Dusty's response and I thought what the xxxx did I do this time???? Glad to see it wasn't me for once!!

Colonoscopy wasn't great because of the "crap" you have to do before hand. The worst though was a flouroendoscopy...all that air they push into your stomach and then push on it! and drinking 6 cups of chalk. Absolute worst so far.
