Reuters) - Coronado Biosciences Inc said its treatment for Crohn's disease, a type of inflammatory bowel disease, failed the main goal of improving patients' response to the disease in a mid-stage study, sending its shares down 70 percent.

The treatment, Trichuris suis ova, comprised eggs taken from a pig whipworm. It is intended to modulate a patient's immune system and prevent it from attacking the body's own tissues and organs.

Coronado's partner Dr. Falk Pharma GmbH is conducting a mid-stage study in Europe, testing three doses of TSO in active Crohn's disease. Data from the study is expected in the fourth quarter, Coronado said.

Coronado Chief Executive Harlan Weisman said the company would analyze data from its trial, along with the anticipated data from its partner's European study to decide on the treatment's future development.

Coronado's trial enrolled 250 patients, dosed with either TSO or placebo once every two weeks, for 12 weeks.

The company said the response rate of patients with moderate-to-severe Crohn's disease taking the treatment was not different from patients taking the placebo as measured on a clinical scale.

Coronado said the treatment was safe and well-tolerated. Adverse events including abdominal pain were balanced between patients taking the treatment and those in the placebo group.

Shares of the company were down at $1.79 in early trading on the Nasdaq. They

I'm extremely disappointed because I felt this was the most promising treatment based on the hygiene hypothesis. It also seemed the safest out of all current approved drugs and clinical trials. Ugh, I hate this disease.

yeah, disappointing, like you I thought it sounded very promising based on the hygiene theory,,, in relation to that I was following dr joel Weinstock of tufts university of massachusetts .

How disappointing. I have been watching this for a while and like others, was hopeful about this treatment. It's interesting because I have spoken via email to the head of Ovamed, who is running the European trial, several times and he was very optimistic about the responses they were seeing. I'll still be watching to see how it all pans out.

That's not the end of helminthic therapy. They have some problems with the trial, eg, allow patients to take other existing drugs, the trial time is too short to allow worms take effect and placebo effects to calm down. Still, in severe patients, TSO showed good signs. If it's about the same as humira or something else, I'd rather take the worms without huge side effects. I guess they will rerun the trial with strict limit.

what are talking about? I still have two bottles of TSO. I made mistake and buy this TSO for about 3500 Euro. this is all ****....

Igor there are other trials still examining its possible benefit. Your formulation may have been ineffective because it wasn't part of a trial. I would advise against buying these on the black market since they are not approved forms of treatment yet.

Hi, I buy it at Ovamed Company, this is production company for Dr Falk Germany. My doctor send a letter that I will be on supervision in hospital during treatment of TSO. It was 2 patients including me and the results - failed.

Everything was done under control of doctor and I did not obtain TSO on the illegal market.
If you need I can sen you all documents.

Alright but as you know some people respond well and others don't even to scientifically verified treatments. I just don't want to discourage anyone from trying a clinical trial because there may still be promise in this therapy in some dosage or in another way we yet to understand.
