I'm in the hospital, all hooked up to my PICC, they upped my dose of pentasa for a few days, I'm not allowed to eat or drink anything until Monday at the least and haven't had anything past 2 days already. Then I have surgery I think Monday. Everyone is saying I need to get part of my bowel removed, and it needs to be done fast. What should I expect? The surgeon that came in wasn't very helpful in giving me information he doesn't seem very social..I don't like him. And he's old. I hope the woman does the surgery cause I just don't feel comfortable with the other guy.

Who has had part of their bowel removed, how was recovery? I imagine it's laparascopic. Well I really, really hope so at least. I will also start Remicade this week and I don't know if I like that, yeah everyone says it makes you feel so much better but I read the risks and there's soooo many it scares me.

Happy Thanksgiving by the way, (those of you can eat it) enjoy it <3

In recovery you will wake up to a catheter, and drainage tube, and some form of painkiller pump. All those will be removed within a few days. I was able to start solid food on day 3 I think. After you get off the pain killer pump you will be put on oral pain killers. I can suggest if the oral ones are not sufficient ask ask ask for more stronger ones cause it's terrible if you do not have antiquate amount to relax and heal.
As for the surgeon, the older one's have the most experience and most surgeons I've seen and talked to aren't always very social but does not effect their quality of work.
It looks like the risks for not getting the surgery are a lot higher then getting it done.
That's all I can help you with. Good Luck!

I didn't wake up with a catheter or a drainage tube. I did however have a pain killer pump (you can press the button every 15min I believe). The surgeon can't tell you much because they wont know what all they are removing until they get in there which is also why you could wake up with a larger scar like I did. If you still have your appendix, they'll probably remove that while they're in there as well to prevent future complications. I was in terrible pain and couldn't eat much and was always tired. My surgical site got infected and took over a month to fully heal where I had a lovely gaping wound (bandaged of course). You'll probably be in the hospital for about a week for recovery and then sent home where you shouldn't do too much cause you're still healing (no lifting, running, bending etc.) As far as normal healing time goes, I don't really know. Expect to feel better once you've healed fully though. :)

I woke up in pain, but you have to expect that. They will treat your pain with medications, normally a PCA pump, which is the button. They set this pump to set to normal peoples settings. If you find yourself in pain, tell them and they can adjust the settings.

I love the fact they want you to walk right away, I was like YEA RIGHT and hit the button and was out again. Then I realized why :( you need to walk to get things moving and you want to minimize the gas pains, they are the worst. SO GET UP AND WALK, LOL.

Remember is it ok to let the geriatrics pass you. I felt like a VW bug in the formula 1 race, BUT I did it.

It takes time to heal, but it happens I promise.

Wish you the best.

Hi I'm in hospital now after surgery on Monday to remove a foot of bowel. I woke up with an epidural in for pain relief which stayed in for 2 days then was given oral pain killers. I was up walking with help as a bit wobbly on tues and out to sit most of the day. Tues night was the worst for pain in my back but was due to epidural not the surgery so they removed it. I agree with above post keep walking as the gas pain in the shoulders isn't pleasant also it's good for the lungs after the anaesthetic. I was able to eat the following day a low residue diet. I'm still waiting for the bowels to work then I can go home. My advice is walk asap do your breathing ex's and don't worry about the old surgeon they're usually the best. Good luck
