Hi all,

So, I'm a 17 year old girl, and I've recently started experiencing some odd GI symptoms. Though I had never been particularly attentive of my bowel movements, I did notice that I began to get constipated intermittently, which made little sense considering how good my diet is. I googled my symptoms, and was relieved when I was able to attribute the constipation to the week before menstruation; indeed, it resolved itself then. I forgot about it once again.

Then, it didn't get better. I've been chronically constipated for around a month: some days are better than others. I have a BM every day, but it's always small, hard, dark-ish balls (not black, just dark brown) that are quite a strain to get out. I've seen them covered in mucus, and recently what caused me all this panic is that I've been what appears to be blood in a few of them. What made me question the Bloody Diagnosis was that it was extremely small, like a small red streak in one of the tiny stools; it looked like a tomato skin, not like typical fresh blood. I didn't bother to inspect it any further, foolishly; I ran off to the internet to diagnose myself with colon cancer. I've been worried ever since.

Because of my age and lack of colon cancer in the family, it's likely not that; however, it must be something, and I'm not going to the doctor for another 2 weeks (couldn't get an appointment.) I was therefore wondering if someone on here could help me? Advice, ideas? Like I said I'm worried sick and it's pretty much ruining my holiday, lol.

TL;DR: white 17 year old girl, 27 bmi, gym 3x per week, no history of any sort of GI distress in the family or myself.

Symptoms: bad constipation; mucus in stool; the occasional feeling of incomplete emptying; bloating; the odd bit of pain in the abdomen and lower back (it's not bad; I can forget about it, and it's intermittent) pain in the anus area, including some itching and what feels like swelling.

Asides from all this, I feel fine. It's just super annoying and worrying.

Very good chance it is not cancer, I think.

I had very similar, if not exact, symptoms as you that lasted for two years. Misdiagnosized with "IBS-C" (IBS favoring constipation not diarrhea)

Then the blood became more common. And I started getting occasional Diarrhha and longer days of Constipation. Never got a colonoscopy though. Then after two years of this, I went into a flare up. Going to the bathroom 15+ times a day. With mucous and blood. Went to ER. got a scope and they found crohns.

Not saying you have crohns!!

But basically saying that it's good you have a doctor appt set up. And I'd recommend asking for a colonscopy to rule out things. They should test for other things besides just saying "oh it's IBS" without actually doing exams to rule the other stuff out, like what happened to me.

Does any food make you sick?

Take notes to the doctor appt about all your symptoms.

Also, try not to worry! There is no good that comes from worry! Just drink water and relax and try not to overthink it. Stress only irritates the gut more :)

Welcome to the forum. Sorry to hear you are having issues. I do not have an answer for you, but have you thought of hemorrhoids? This can cause streaks of blood, itching, and swelling. Many things can cause constipation so it would be hard to know for sure what is going on without an exam and tests. Hang in there, try to relax as much as possible until you see the doctor. It might help to write down all your symptoms and questions so you get all that you can out of the Dr visit.

I understand your fears. I was terrified when I started having symptoms...thought I had cancer and was going to die. 7 years later I'm still here and doing great. You never know what it could be. The internet can be helpful and detrimental at the same time.

Hi there, and welcome. Do not worry. Constipation can cause some bleeding sometimes and bloating. I am glad you are seeing your doctor to get checked. You will feel a lot better after you discuss your problem with your Doctor. In the meantime, look at your diet and vary it , including fruit to help with the constipation. Good luck. Let me know how you are.

Out of curiosity, at what age did you begin getting these symptoms? I'm sorry you had to go through all of that, it sounds awful! Yeah, I'll request a colonoscopy. I'm getting some milk of magnesia tomorrow to help with the constipation, so I'll see how that goes.

No, I don't think so. Though saying that, after lunch on Monday I had an awful reaction: my stomach twisted, burned, and felt like it was being stabbed with hot knives; and I had awful nausea, but it subsided, thankfully. Nothing I ate was out of the ordinary: natural yeo valley yogurt, grapes & melon, and coffee. I was, however, working in a boiling hot chemistry lab with no windows all day, handling things like DCM. It could've also been stress - I have been worrying about this, after all. :p

I do, however, avoid gluten, as it seems to bloat me and cause some skin issues.

Yes, that's true! I'm a natural worrier, but I shouldn't let it ruin my holiday, haha. Thanks :)

@teeny5 I'll be sure to do that; I'll also take a note of when I started noticing things. Is it wise to express my worries about it being something serious?

I believe I have had hemorrhoids before, or a fissure; about a year back (maybe more? maybe less?) I had a bowel movement which I thought was normal but was bright red on wiping, and turned the water bright red too. It only happened a couple of times, and I think I recall it being associated with rectal pain, so probably not a recurrent thing.

@Honey thank you very much, I'll let you know :)

My diet consists of a lot of fruit, hence my confusion! However, I also eat a lot of dairy, which could be causing some unknown issues - I haven't tried to cut it out yet. But, as you say, I'll see the doctor first and discuss it with her.

I started having more consistent GI problems when I was 26. I'm 29 now.

I know the first time I went to the GI, they ordered a thyroid test and a celiacs test (both tests I had before from another doctor when I was having non-GI issues, so I knew they would be negative) I'm guessing they'll do that for you.

I hope you're feeling better soon! I know the uncertainty when being sick is such a downer, but soon you will have answers!!

Yes I would mention it. Maybe the dr can ease some of your concerns by answering questions you have. Mine wouldn't tell me what they thought it was, but did inform me about the next steps of testing and gave me pamphlets to read and information about diet changes that would be easier for my digestive tract - low lactose, low gluten, no fried or spicy foods, etc. My GI is very thorough and will take the time to explain every test and show you where in the body something is happening. For me the more information I got the less I stressed. Let me focus on things I could control to see if it would help my symptoms. Once I got the diagnosis I read many books that discussed diet, symptoms, complications...like I said more info made me feel better.

Good luck and keep us posted on how the Dr visit goes!
