working from home, any ideas?

Hi, I had undiagnosed Crohn's throughout further education and found myself generally failing the second year of everything I tried to do, I managed to hold down a job for a year or so while the ickier symptoms were going full swing.
I often finished shift unable to walk home or stand properly after a day of lifting.

I was diagnosed with Crohn's and I am yet to see any improvement in my symptoms. I feel I require a few solid ideas for something to aim for in a working from home capacity, the situation is complicated by my girlfriend having a phobia of sickness and specifically vomiting, ideally I would be able to hibernate somewhat during the winter so anything that enables me to avoid other people would be excellent. In all probability I will end up on an immune suppressant at some point and it would be great if I could find something to do with life that wont add more stress.

I am currently attempting to learn web design from home and a friend is going to introduce me to a few graphic design programs to see if i can pick that up on any level, my issue is that this seems a bit ambitious and long term, great to work toward but no help in the immediate future.

I understand there will be a learning curve for anything new but a more achievable short term solution would be of great interest.
I have applied for numerous simple data entry jobs most of which I believe are most probably scam, damn i even fell for a roulette scam which is just plain embarrassing : (

I have had 3 years now of being pisspoor and not being able to work enough or at all, i hate being on the disability benefits and almost fear Crohn's stabilizing as I don't have a clue what i will do. any suggestions will be of interest. ty

Just because your Crohn's stabilizes doesn't mean you'll be kicked off of disability benefits. Its still a chronic illness with no cure. After my surgery the government tried to kick me off while I was still recovering and I had to get a lawyer to help me keep the disability status in place. Luckily that worked so I don't have to worry as much. Even if we haven't been hospitalized for a month straight doesn't mean that we don't require regular doctor visits or constant medication not to mention that even while in remission we still have bad days along with the good so working can be difficult.

I don't really have any ideas for you for working from home but there are some things like fusion cash where you do pointless online labor and post on their forum and make a little money that way. Even by signing up you can make some money and when you refer other people you get money each time someone joins. My boyfriend joined and if you want to join too use this link: http://www.fusioncash.net/?ref=g0ku4life cause then he'll get money as well just by referring you (or anyone reading this who decides to do it). :p He made about $100 last year by using the site casually. You could make much more than that if you made it your job and found other sites that offer the same thing. Sorry I don't know of any other sites but that's the only one I know that isn't a scam.

Other than that all I can suggest is figure out what it is you're good at (if you don't know already) and see what possibilities are out there for a job like that. For instance, I'm an artist and could sell my paintings and sculptures or any other stuff I make but there's no guarantee of a steady income if I simply do it on my own. Eventually I'd have to get into the gallery scene and that whole art world business makes me sick so that's why I never got into it, not to mention materials can be expensive.

Good luck!

You could have a look at Arise UK. Basically they recruit people to train as call advisors ( homeworker ) for the Shop Direct group of catalogues. I did and passed the training and worked with them for a bit but had to stop due to technical problems with my phone line.
Have a look and if you want to ask anything about the job, PM me. I do warn you though, it's not the most stress free or well-paid job I've done, but that might just be me!

I can totally relate to all of this. I'm currently finishing my degree online at home but it's hard going. I really want to be able to work but haven't been able to work for anything more than a few months without getting really sick. My degree is in Scottish Culture Studies but I have done some complementary therapies qualifications. I would really like to work from home due to the crohn's and my kids being very young at the moment. I'm really good at admin type work and thought something like that at home. I thought of taking a book keeping course as well as that seems to be quite a good business to get in to. Just so frustrating.

I hear ya, Kers. I've been thinking possibly about the bookeeping too. I've missed out on a couple of office jobs here because I don't have payroll experience. I believe you can also get funding through the ILA if you're on a low wage, benefits etc.
And there are so many scams out there when you search for work from home stuff on the Net.

OK following up all of those options the arise thing sems to be fairly hated by everyone, so I might put that one onto the back burner, thank you for your contributions thus far and would be glad for any more.

What about online tutoring? I don't know much about it, but one of my sister's ex-boyfriends did that for a while to supplement income. I don't know the company, but I think the way it was done was students would sign in for tutoring sessions online and then you would help them with homework or whatever.

ty for the suggestion
Anyone know of any credible places to read about this?

well ive applied for everything mentioned here pretty much, once again ty for you responses and rather hope that someone posts some more ideas as i cant get any support from the job centre about working from home and really dont know where to turn for skills or employment or in fact relevant skills for a likely employment.
thus far it seems that learning excel is my best option while trying to learn web design on the side, but generating money this way is going to be unpredictable and slow, I was hoping to find something i could do to sustain these ideas and get me away from benefits, it seems the main point of benefits are to lower expectations and make you learn how to accept existing rather than living, rant\

i am a attorney , but i am now retired and on ss disability. i live in a codo complex where i know lots of people, so i plan on starting a car service frm my area to the local airports. its all cash and cheaper then the local taxi. sometimes, you have to think out of the box,and there is always a way, especialy if you live in a area where you know people and they are aware of your situation, playing the empathy card

I understand what your saying and spend a lot of time thinking about this, my local area is proliferated with computer shops and maintenance people which was my initial idea, in truth this wouldn't have been grade A useful as my girlfriend has emetophobia and Im liable to find myself on immuno suppressants at some point, so the idea of entering other peoples homes becomes a moderate complication. this is why i am hoping to benefit from a few ideas i haven't yet tried. I wish you luck with your idea, if you have the capital the contacts and the car I see that being fairly lucrative for you.

Just an fyi to others posting, im British, the fusion cash thing is only for usa residents but feel free to post things that have worked for you regardless of where you are from, if an American Crohnie is helped via this that is at least a measure of success.
good luck all

One of my friends is a medical transcriptionist and works from home. She really likes it and she makes more money than I do as a teacher.

This would be an excellent job for anyone who can match the skill-set, great suggestion. Im massively under skilled for this and currently checking to see its possible in the UK, still, well worth some solid investigation.

a link on wiki for others to have a read/

It might also be worth looking at the 'Money Saving Expert' forum. They have a lot of threads with ideas for homeworking, living on a tight budget etc.
