Real maple syrup vs artificial syrup.

I've been cutting artificial sugars out of my diet. I read the ingredients on the label when I shop at grocery stores. Maple syrup is the only real stuff, anything else is artificial.

    Prednisone Sweating

I don't have an explanation but the dreaded pred makes me sweat too. It's not a withdrawal symptom, it's a side effect. I had to be real careful if I was out in sunny warm weather.

What are your SAFE and UNSAFE foods?

Just added the breath mint "Icebreakers" to my list of unsafe foods.

    Bowel Movements

Don't be embarrassed to discuss it here. If your stools are formed normal, then malabsorption doesn't appear to be a problem. Never been on Humira or Imodium, can't speak of any experience. Your metabolism is up though. How much fiber is in your diet? Grape Nuts for breakfast keeps my...

Novel mechanism for Crohn's disease uncovered

There seems to be some truth to that. After my surgery four years ago, my surgeon recommended eating yogurt daily to replenish the bacteria that is friendly to the intestines. No flare up since then.

No more steak for me :'(

Can you eat steak if you prepare it yourself at home? I have better luck with meals I make myself. Had too much trouble with restaurants.

I keep some pants with elastic waistbands for those times I am bloated from a flare-up.

When can you work core muscles following surgery...?

Be REAL careful with any physical exertions with the abdominal muscles. Doctor should order a sedentary healing period. I never realized how much the abdominal muscles were used in normal everyday stuff. The more you rest, the better they will heal. There's a LOT of muscle tissue to repair...

How do you make the decision for surgery?

I had a flare-up for five weeks, and after I finished the meds it came right back. The CT scan showed a couple of fistulas and that's when my doctor recommended the resection surgery.

    Eating at restaurants

My doctor had suggested a gluten-free diet to help the chronic abdominal cramps I had been experiencing. So far I have isolated raw nuts, foods with high starch, and processed cheese as triggers to my cramps. None of those have gluten so I had my doubts about the diet but I would try anything...

What are your SAFE and UNSAFE foods?

I had to cut out raw nuts, they triggered painful agonizing cramps. But they don't bother me when they are cooked or in butter form. But beware of candy with peanut butter - peanut butter M&Ms triggered the cramps.

Hospitalized again/ NG for first time

While you are in the hospital, ask to speak to a dietician about bland diet. The goal of the bland diet is to eat foods that do not irritate the digestive tract or generate gas. The more you stay on it, the less likely you may develop inflammation and/or blockage. Not as restrictive as a...

Hospitalized again/ NG for first time

The 1st time I wore the NG tube I didn't have the gag reflex. The 2nd time, it was tickling my gag reflex. Had to be careful with movement of the body and the tube. And drinking water did ease initial insertion. That's the worst part of the whole procedure. It helped to close my eyes.

Hospitalized again/ NG for first time

Signs of a flare-up are exactly what you had - dehydration, vomiting, bloating/inflammation. It's a matter of recognizing the warning signs, and they are not the only ones. You did the right thing to go to ER. I have been on the NG tube twice. It is very uncomfortable and it does not get...

What is the worst thing about having Crohn's Disease?

My case is pretty mild compared to most people but the worst thing is not knowing what foods can trigger 12-18 hours of painful abdominal cramps.
