Hey guys, so I just found out yesterday that I now have osteoporosis from all the prednisone I've been on :(. I'm pretty bummed out, I mean obviously it is nowhere near as bad as hearing you have CD, but I just wanna hear from any one else that may be in the same boat? How do you manage, have you had any fractures? I'm not really sporty anyway so its not like im an NFL player but yeah, iunno just looking for someone to tell me its not the end of the world

Stay away from prednisone as much as you can!! Prednisone is so bad! I had avascular necrosis on my left hip. My cartilage wore off, so it was bone to bone. I was unable to walk at times, and the pain! Oh that pain was horrible! Well cause of it I had to get a hip replacement. I am much better now, but I have to limit myself in activities. Doctor made me promise that I wouldn't run/jump. My only recommendation since your bones are that fragile is to stay away from sports, running, or anything that can cause you to fall. Sorry to hear that you have that, good luck !

Hey!

To be entirely honest, I would say the opposite. Well, not entirely. High impact stuff like running and jumping can be bad for osteoporosis, but some low impact resistance exercises can actually help regenerate bone structure much the way muscles do, but at a much slower rate.

I was diagnosed with osteoporosis in my lower back, and I'm only 17! Since then I've been taking calcium citrate + D supplements and have had no issue with even doing things like barbell squats. It really depends on the stage it's at. If it's a very late diagnosis and is very extensive it can be dangerous, but you can actually strengthen your bones by physical activity if it is quite early.

Before undertaking any serious exercise though I'd consider contacting your doc and also a personal trainer, because they are trained to help you work around such things.

Don't lose hope! :)

EDIT: Also, I don't mean to appear as though I'm discrediting you CDB, because I'm not. The extent of having a hip replacement definitely means you need to lay off on high impact activities with things involving your hips. I just figured a new diagnosis might indicate that it's in the early stages. Sorry if I appeared to come off that way!

I will second the notion that things aren't necessarily bleak. I too had over 10% bone density loss. Key word here is HAD. A year after the scan, the issue was gone. I couldn't tolerate calcium supplements, but was able to keep a high enough dairy intake to regain what I had lost. This was confirmed in a follow up scan. Consult your doctor, figure out what you can do for exercise as it really does help keep your bones healthy. Maybe it's as simple as a little extra walking.

I've had osteoporosis since I was a child (idiopathic - not from pred). I've never broken a bone or had a fracture in my life. It's not inevitable that osteoporosis will lead to pain and injury - just take care not to take excessive risks (some contact sports and things have a high risk of bone injury), and try not to worry too much. I imagine I may well break some bones some day that maybe I wouldn't if my bones were healthy, but I'll deal with that if and when I come to it.

Years ago, I was told I had osteoporosis as a result of being on prednisone for a prolonged period because of the Crohn's Disease. I took medication for a while for the osteoporosis but I am off it now. I was under the impression that osteoporosis doesn't have to be permanent. Best to you.:)

I also have Osteoperosis induced by prednisone and I am now dancing to party music to strengthen my bones and take calcium, vitamin D3 and k2.

If things don't improve my rheumatologist is considering an infusion of Reclast. I haven't had any fractures or breaks but my doctor says I'm young and can still reverse a lot of the damage.
