Hi Guys,

Just wondering if any of you that are on 6MP could help me with a problem? I have been on 100mg of 6MP for the past three weeks and have had some side effects; dramatic loss of appetite, dizzy spells, fatigue, head aches. I was wondering if any of you on 6MP have experienced these side effects and if they have gone away after being on this medicine for awhile? and how long it took until these side effects to disappear?

Thanx Guys

It took a good two years before the side-effects of 6MP began to go away (for me, and I was on the same dosage as you). I began taking 6MP at least a decade ago, and I'm still on it. It's the only thing that has helped me maintain a remission (besides the evil Prednisone).

Although the side-effects will definitely begin to lessen after you've been on it for a few months, and you should definitely talk to your doctor about them because 6MP is a bit risky, and they'll want to run the pro-predict (sp?) blood test to make sure that the side-effects are not because 6MP is affecting your liver.

If you are standing and start feeling dizzy, SIT DOWN. Immediately. I fainted a lot during the first year of my 6MP use because I didn't take the dizzy spells seriously. Now, as soon as I feel dizzy, I sit down, regardless of where I am, and how strange it might look.

I also worked around the loss of appetite by drinking Ensure (for taste reasons, even though Nestle's Modulen for IBD has supposedly gotten a lot better taste-wise, so I'm going to try that, as well), and the Ensure helped with the dizziness, and fatigue, since those are also two symptoms of malnourishment. And I used OTC Aleve for the headaches (but check with your doctor first, of course, before taking it) and it helped a lot.

Good luck, and I hope the side-effects start to lessen for you very, very soon.

Katie.

has it been helping you out? i just started on it

Does anybody know the difference between 6 mp and Imuran? I'm now on 50 mg of Imuran; I have been on it now for 2.5 years, and before on higher dose (150 mg) it caused me to have liver toxicity!!!!

I have been taking 100mg/day for about a month now. I had a purplish rash on the backs of my hands for the first week but that went away. I haven't had any other side effects.

edit
or maybe I spoke too soon on this one.

6mp and its side effects ?????

I've been on 100mg now for about 40 days, Its too soon to know if it is worikng because apparently it takes a good 3 months to get the full effect of this drug. I'm on Entercort in the mean time until 6mp kicks in. I've lost my appetite on 6mp and I am noticing increased fatigue. Mazen I was on Imuran and it didn't work for me so my Gastro suggested 6mp instead. From what I understood from my Gastro, Imuran converts into the drug Mercaptopurine that 6mp is made of so by taking 6mp you are sort of by passsing the conversion process that is required when taking Imuran.

For the appetite and fatigue issue, try to take the 6mp with food and at night. This sometimes helps.

1 week

I've only been taking 6 MP for one week. I'm miserable! I can't eat without feeling like I'm going to throw up. I don't feel hungry, but I know I need to eat. I'm tired and I am not in a good mood! And I read that I may loose my hair, I'm panicking. Needless to say I called my doctor and I'm trying to see if I can get some other medicine.
Has anyone dealt with this, and overcome these terrible times I'm in now?
What can I do to help?

the worst for me is the fatigue and i get infections and boils. luckily my hair didn't fall out as it's one of the few things i have going for me. i had a lot to begin with so i guess that helps. good luck! try not to freak out and just make sure they do blood work before you start and every few weeks for the first month to make sure you are tolerating it.

I have been on and off 6mp for years and I learned that as long as I take it a night right before I got to bed, I ssem to be fine. 6mp makes me naseaus and tired so if I take it a night then I sleep through the tiredness and I usually bypass the naseau, sometimes I still do wake up feeling queezy. I get remicade and do take 6mp and the combo works really well for me. Shannon

thanks

Thanks for the advice. I will definitely start taking it right before going to bed. But I have to take it in the morning too, so the sick feeling goes on allllllll day.
What's remicade? Does that help with nausea?
