I've been taking 6MP for about 2 1/2 years, started at 75mg and raised to 100mg a year and a bit ago. I was normally around 147-154 pounds, but over the past few months (mainly due to feeling well) I've started eating more healthily and being more active (the latter only more recently though, I HATE exercise lol), and as a result I've lost around 14-17 pounds (it fluctuates) since being 147 pounds in July. I'm now around 130-133 pounds - not much for an adult male but I'm only 5'7".

Anyway, over the last few weeks I've had a rash develop on my upper body (neck, chest, back and arms). Not too much bother, just a bit itchy sometimes. I wondered if I was reacting to one of my meds, and I just had my 3 monthly blood test last week and was told for the first time that my liver bloods were a bit 'wonky'. Is this likely to be due to my recent weight loss - i.e. I'm now taking too much 6MP for my body weight? I've also noticed that I'm getting worse hangovers if I drink alcohol - I figured it was me just getting older haha but it may be that my liver function is a bit compromised now by this 100mg dose.

I've told my IBD nurse this today and I'm waiting for a response - I'm a little concerned though that my doctor is going to suggest a reduction back to 75mg. In some ways that would be GREAT - the first time since I developed this disease that my drug intake would be being DECREASED! But I'm at an awkward weight where I think my ideal/max dose would actually be something like 88mg - smack bang between 75 and 100, so 75mg might not be enough and I could run into problems. I was mildly symptomatic when I started my healthier lifestyle and I'm now symptom free - at first I wondered if it was just being healthier that had helped, but now I'm wondering if the weight loss has a resulted in a slight over-dose of 6MP which has totally knocked my colitis on the head but is now putting a bit of strain on my liver. In which case I don't want to reduce it!

I also don't want to be do anything hasty because I think I'm slowly going to gain weight through fitness. I did the healthier eating first without incorporating exercise (because I despise it) so I was just losing fat and not gaining muscle. For the past week and a half I've been working out daily and have noticed an increase in muscle, and I've gained a pound even though I've been eating the same amount as I was when I was losing a pound a week. If I keep going this way, replacing fat with muscle (which weighs more), then I could end up not too far off from the weight I started at (just with a better body shape) and 100mg would be the right dose again!

Apologies for the essay. I don't know if anyone will have any input (assuming you got to the end of my ramblings!), but I thought this might be interesting for others to read - something to watch out for if you're on a drug that's dosed based on your body-weight! It would be just my luck to get punished for finally getting fit haha.

I was at 75 mg for quite a while since I was first diagnosed and it didn't keep up with my weight. I think you have a valid point. The drug, I think, wasa key in getting me into remission but not following up with the doseage increase based on body weight may have been an issue in the disease becoming more active and a few flareups.

I don't think they go by weight much at all. They should check the therapeutic level of the drug in your body every three months when they do labs. If you are in the therapeutic range then they leave you as is. I think depending on how you metabolize the drug your levels will be different. Our G.I. also said it is important not to get dehydrated and drink a full glass of water when taking your meds as this can effect bloodstream levels.

Do you know if your G.I. is checking your levels? I would just ask if they are still in therapeutic range.

I was on 100 mg of 6mp for a while but then my GI doctors were concerned because my white blood count was low and it continued to drop. My GI doctor from Philadelphia suggested that I alternate my dosage - take 100 mg one day and 75 mg the next and then get my blood count retested after three weeks. I know that you will be talking to your doctor about this but perhaps this alternate dosing would be helpful for you as it is a more gradual change. Please let us know what your doctor advises.

My 17 year old is currently taking 100mg she is 132lbs. Currently awaiting test results to check the dosing amount, hopefully the dose is too low and the aza dose can be increased.

one dr prescribed 250 mgs for me! and i got a second opinion an was given 150mgs. i had my levels checked at 150mgs and they are theraputically correct!

You mentioned alcohol. Were you drinking a day or two before the blood tests? I'm on 75 mg of 6mp and I was told strictly no alcohol. Maybe that's the source of your liver results. You might want to discuss that with your doctor.
