After my GI doc dumped me for two months to "explore other angles", I was diagnosed with stage 3 chronic kidney disease. I went to the nephrologist, and he viewed an ultrasound that I had done for GI in March of '13, and indications of damage were present long before my creatinine shot up. He ran some more tests, and luckily the amount of proteinuria dictates that I should have slow disease progression, with the potential of staying stage 3 for the rest of my life if I behave myself, whatever that means. Haha.

At any rate, I'm anemic again. Ferritin dropped to 3, iron is at 24, and hgb was 9.2. I've been iron deficient for quite some time, and bouncing back and forth between low-normal and anemic hgb levels, yet the nephrologist is the first one who said I need to be on iron supplements. Why did it take this long? I know I could easily take supps on my own, but with the possibility of toxicity I don't think I'd want to take it without the recommendation of a doctor. He said he could write me a script, or I can pick some up on my own. I chose the latter, but now I'm wishing I had just gone with the prescription because I have no idea what brand to get, or how much I should be taking!

Anyone have a favorite brand I should look into? And should I follow the dosing information on the supplement label?

I'm so glad I finally have a proactive doctor. That whole 'schedule a follow-up in two months' thing was maddening.

Im so glad you seem to be getting somewhere :) it's amazing how much impact a different doctor can have.

I can't give you any advice about what iron supps to take, I usually stick with prescription if I have to take them, but I struggle to tolerate any form of iron tablet so can't really stick with any for very long.

I will advise you to be careful with the dosing though, and make sure your iron levels stay in the safe area, too much iron in your blood can be very dangerous.

I always take the Docs prescription, you could call his office and tell them you changed your mind and ask him to call it in. I tend to play on the safe side.

Hope you feel better!
