I have been having rectal pain and there is a lump next to my anus.
Very scared. Abscess maybe? What will they do to treat it?

Hi Sailor. Sorry to hear about the lump :-( Have you got a doctor's appointment? If it is an abscess, I think they may initially treat it with antibiotics. If you head over to the 'Fistula & Abscess' subforum, there are people there with similar issues. Hope you can get sorted quickly without hassle.

The GI wont see me, they told me to make an appoinment with the Colorectal surgeon.
I see them Wednesday. Thanks for the advice I will check out the subforum.

Oh good, glad to hear you don't have to wait to long to see someone. Let us know how you get on on Wednesday.

Sorry to hear you are having pain. I had the same thing for months and while I was in the hospital for overall treatment the colorectal surgeon looked at it and did a ct scan. said i had two abscesses. one supposedly drained on its own but the other wasn't doing much so he did a minor surgery. From what I heard they usually just give you a numbing agent and do a small incision, but because i was in such excruciating pain from just moving, let alone touching it, he gave me general anesthesia and cut it open. While the incision site is a little tender, it is NOTHING like the pain I felt before. I can actually walk now and sit down comfortably. Now i just have to do sitz baths 3 times a day and go back next week. they also put me on flagyl. I would def get it checked out soon so you can get some relief. Since I was under GA when they cut it open I can't tell you what it's like but again, I feel so much relief now that the pocket of pus and swelling is gone. i wish you the best. hope this helped

Thanks guys,
He took a look and put me on flagyl. He wanted to try that first before draining it. Oh and he said that he would like to see me switched to remicade. So... a little surprised by that I guess.

Sailor,

Do you have a specific day/time to follow up with the surgeon? I would not let it go more than a week!

My son is now healing from surgery to drain perianal abscess. We went to a quick after-hours clinic on 7/2, the doc put him on flagyl and augmentin, and said follow up with GI in few days since my son had Crohns'. I didn't even know at time that this was related to crohns!

Called GI service and they said to bring them to ER at 6 in morning on 7/4 and ask for colorectal surgeon to drain it. Intern or resident did it in ER, then we had a follow up appt on 7/11 with senior surgeon. He saw it and said it needed to be operated on next day, 7/12, and be prepared to stay overnight. He ended up staying 3 nights.

I feel if I had been more educated initially and pushed for surgeon it may not have gotten this bad.

Bottom line is they have to follow the least invasive (i.e. costly for insurance purposes) methods first, but that can mean complications and more pain for patient!

Did they say anything about soaking in hot tub of water or epsom salts? That will help it form a head so it can be lanced or drained, which from my quick education on abscess over the past few weeks is really the only way it can heal.

Take care of yourself!!

I've not been on Remicade, but it seems that it is often prescribed to help to deal with and prevent abscesses and also fistulas.
