I have had crohn's disease since 1978. In away I have been lucky as I have only had two surgeries. Since the early 2000's I started developing these very painful drainage areas on the right side of my butt. My GI says this I related to Crohn's and unfortunately there is no real treatment as surgery is not a a guarantee. Since Abcessess or caused by bacteria in nature, is there any drugs that could minimize these issues? Not keen on any more surgeries as I am just now recovering from a component seperation hernia surgery related to my last resection surgery. I would not wish this disease on anyone, very embarrassing and painful. I don't even think my family realizes just what type of effort you need just to block the pain and go to work.

I am 47 and have been told that crohn's sometimes just burns out, boy to do I hope so. I feel I am missing out on what should be the best time of my life and with my family.

Thanks for letting me vent...

Hi Scott,

Many people have success in healing fistulas with Remicade. But it is not an option if you have an infection. Often times if there is a lot of drainage, infection is involved. The usual prescription for this is a combo of Cipro/Flagyl which are antibiotics. They work really well, as long as you continue to take them. Many people take these for extended periods of time, but I personally do not like the idea of staying on antibiotics. There are several types of surgeries, but your doctor is right that many are not successful in Crohn's patients. There is information on the forum on setons, fistulotomies, flap advancement surgeries (which I have had), and something relatively new called a LIFT surgery. I would encourage you to have a look around the fistulas sub-forum. There are many people here who have dealt with this issue, hence there is a wealth of knowledge and experience. I am sure that most people here will be happy to answer any questions.

Thanks for the info Cookie. I am going to see my GI and will ask him about this. I have taken both of these in the past. Currently, I am on Pentasa and smal dose of Prednizone. I had to stop my Humaria treatment for the time being do to my recent surgery. I have also heard the 6-MP helps also. I will also look into the sub-forum you mentioned.
