Hi all, I suffer with abdominal cramps, they are in the centre of my abdomen a few inches above my belly button. From reading on this forum, these cramps indicate partial bowel obstructions in the small bowel. No other symptoms (i.e. passing gas fine and no nausea or vomitting) but lots of bowel gurgling. Is it always the case that cramps = obstructions? Can anything else be causing these cramps, such as my bowel working too slowly or something?

Thanks

Please consult with your GI and let him get to the bottom of this. I have pain everyday i have crohns and ibs

Cramps can be associated with a lot of different things. My obstructions aren't crampy, but more like waves of pain. The gurgling I have is due to gas and food passing through my stricture.

Bowel obstructions aren't the only cause of cramps. My Crohns eventually developed a reaction to certain foods which would cause cramps, I had to isolate those foods which wasn't easy.

Ask your doctor about a bland diet. One of the causes of abdominal cramps is foods that irritate the digestive tract. Bland diet omits these offending foods. After I have a case of the cramps, the piping settles down after a few days on the diet. I was able to isolate the offending foods by slowly introducing them back in and keeping notes of my meals.

I have severe cramping during bad flares. This is when I have bowel movements, and when something passes the inflamed areas in my colon. I have ulcerative colitis.
