I've seen a couple members now mention that doctor's thought they were having "abdominal migraines". The first time I read that I went from  to :eek2: to :ybatty: once I started researching them. It sounds like an utter load of crap to me but I want to keep an open mind. Now, I believe people are experiencing pain in their abdomen but is western medicine REALLY going to start telling people they have "abdominal migraines" and sending them on their way? Is there validity to such a diagnosis or is it doctor's not wanting to take the time to figure out what is causing the abdominal pain?

Sounds like lazy BS to me but I actually just now found it in my medical coding book. Weird.

It's listed under "variants of migraine, not elsewhere classified".

My sons girlfriends dad was diagnosed with that. After celiac disease was ruled out. As thin as he is I said get tested for Chrons. His Dr said no- he said ok!! Go figure!

Abdominal Migraine is a legit diagnosis. It is a variant of migraine and Sarah was diagnosed with it due to her symptoms. Of course it wasn't abdominal migraine that was the problem but her symptoms did fit when they were in the sporadic phase...upper epigatric pain acompanied by headache and vomiting.

Although not common it is far more common in children than adults and affects females more than males. It tends to lead to migraines as children age.

I was also diagnosed with abdominal migraines, but this was as a child, years before crohns. It was because I was sick a lot and complained of tummy aches so I went to the hospital, I can't remember if they did any tests. But they suggested trying to cut out all the migraine typical food like chocolate and orange. And then my Mum realised I was drinking A LOT of orange juice. So we cut it out my diet and the problem went away! I have never drank orange juice again!

My middle daughter was dx with this form of migraines as a five year old, she had classic symptoms, stomach ache, vomiting and sudden loss colour but no headache. Sleep for 12 hours and wake up fine.

I can tell you, abdominal migraines sure as hell are real and are hell to go through. I was diagnosed last year, but have been suffering with them for four years. Mine are triggered by stress so almost every monday of the school year I get pain in my stomach and throw up everything in my system and then am left throwing up bile for at least three hours every time. It starts with a slight pain that just kind of makes me think I'm hungry and then it turns into sharp pain and it feels like someones stabbing you in the stomach over and over again. Luckily for me once I throw up at least for an hour, if I go into my room, turn off all the lights and close my blinds and sleep it will pass. This is what clued my doctor into abdominal migraines. I'm sensitive to light during my episodes and sleep can relieve them. Please don't say this disease is all a hoax, because many people suffer with this and telling them what they're going through is nothing just pisses me off.

p.s. abdominal migraines are caused by the blood vessels in the stomach swelling and it causes a lot of pain, just like a normal migraine. Doctors give medicine for this, but also just like a migraine, there's not much a doctor can do. If you have this disease you just have to tough it out. Occassionally a trip to the ER is needed if you lose too much fluid but thats really all the help you can get. Once a migraine starts you can't take a pill or anything orally because you'll just throw it up.

My daughter is in the middle of her 2nd Abdominal Migraine now, and has been throwing up about 5 times a day for 3 months. She has been tested head to foot for everything imaginable, all normal - so by elimination that is the diagnosis, and the anti-migraine meds usually work (although not at the moment but we live in hope!). It is definitely real but I admit when we were first told the diagnosis I thought the Drs were making stuff up.
