Hello all,
My question is I have been on humira for over a year, now my friend had just had a baby 2 weeks ago ,she refuses to have her baby vaccinated...is it ok for me to be around the baby? Thank you all

AGREED- Not a good idea. Both baby and yourself have no immune system. Your body being on TNF blocker ( Humira) is unable to fight the simplest things. folliculitis is a perfect example.

I think if you are vaccinated against the things babies can carry you are fine. I also think the baby is fine around you, yes you are suppressed but if you aren't sick than its fine. You can consult a doctor but you aren't suppressed to the point where you are carrying every bug on the planet. Your body is just suppressing TNF it's not fully suppressed.

But babies are living petri dishes so avoid an smooching and snot and stuff. See if you can talk some sense into the Mom. Vaccinations don't cause anything, and they prevent a lot of dangerous illnesses. She is well-meaning but misinformed. We are seeing diseases come back that were nearly extinguished a few years ago. They just don't know how bad it can be.

Even IF vaccines could cause autism it'd be worth it to give a few few children a mild learning disability if it means millions don't die of easily treated illness. FYI this isn't even true because the suspected chemical Thermisol, was willfully withdrawn from vaccine use years ago.

Wow I didn't realise this. Feeling like this is a stupid question, I've just started Humira, I understood it suppressed my Immune System but how would I transfer disease to a non immunised baby?

its completely safe as long as neither are sick.

Just because you're not showing symptoms doesn't mean you're not infected. Asymptomatic carriers, silent but active vectors, have been understood by medical science for over a century. Immunosuppresed people will carry them more easily because their immune system's diminished response can go undetected. Immunosuppressed people can also lose their vaccine granted immunity simply because their immune system stops generating the required antibodies.

Absolutely no contact.

Okay, after reading this, I am just a tad bit scared! I teach first graders, who come to me often sick with all sort of illnesses. Just completed my loading doses of HUMIRA, and will be taking my injection every two weeks. Should I be concerned about my immune system?

Hello all,
Thank you so much for the responses I have to talk to my doc about this , but I really was worried about this subject ,I really can't say why she is not having him vaccinated . But I did talk to her , but she was saying she really don't understand it if neither one of us is sick, but I am very concerned....my 14 yr old daughter has crohns also and she is on Imuran and I know her immune system is the same...so really I am concerned about her also...
Again Ty

The baby is 2 weeks? No kid is vaccinated at that age. There are unfortunately lots of people not vaccinated in the world. Many you won't even know about and will be in contact with them anyways. All you can do is worry about keeping yourself up to date. That is all the protection you can have. Can't control others on vaccines. Lord knows I have tried. There is blood work you can have done to check your vaccination levels and if it is safe, you can get a booster (no live vaccines).

lisadc1, I would make sure you are doing the best you can regarding hand washing etc. Expect you may catch a couple of extra colds. My kid did when in school after starting Humira. Don't be scared, just be prepared. Worrying about potentially being near sick people just might be enough stress to make you sick. Humira sopresses your immune system, not makes it disappear. You can fight things off, just takes longer.

I think, as long as the baby isn't sick, then you are perfectly fine to be around it. You do need to be careful being around sick people though. But if the baby is healthy, I wouldn't worry about it.

Interesting. This would partly explain why I never seemed to catch what others around me had.
