Hey IBDers,

So I had a Perianal abscess, around 2 weeks ago I went to hospital as the abscess continued to get worse and I couldn't stand the pain anymore.

I had emergency surgery. Now I have been having the wound redressed by district nurses but after a bath or shower I put a new dressing on myself.

The thing is, is when I changed my dressing I have notices a green, not to pleasant smelling pus on the dressing. although the wound looks well, nice and clean as the nurses told me.

So I am just wondering if this is normal, now it's been 2 wekks since the op, and there has always been some gunk, but I really noticed the green colour today.

Any thought's? Is it normal or infected?

Thanks,

Cameron

Is the wound red or sore at all? that could be a sign of infection. What would concern me really is that it is foul smelling and green.

if the wound looks healthy and isn't causing you any pain ,and seeing as the pus is just on the bandage it could just be some leakage from the wound itself as it was an absess which properly had a load of horrible stuff inside it.

I would keep a close eye on it and mention it to the nurses, maybe keep the bandages to show them?

I think that is pretty common. It is just the pus and infection draining out of the lanced abscess. In the past, my abscesses have drained for a couple months after having them surgically lanced. My colorectal told me that this is completely normal, and a only tiny abscess could take up to three months before it stops draining.

Just watch for fevers, redness, or worsening pain as this could indicate infection and a possible fistula.
