Hi all!
I've had some pain in my left side for about 3 weeks now and finally went to my dr (oh diagnosed with CD in 2010) she sent me for an emergency CT thinking I have an abscess. Got the results today and the receptionist called today and said I need to go to the ER right away and have it delt with... I was so caught up in everything I didn't ask what "dealing with" consisted of?! I'm currently at home waiting for my husband to get off work to take the kids so I can go to the hospital. Can anyone tell me what to expect?!
Thank for your help!

So your abscess is intra abdominal?

Normally they would want to drain it if it can be accessed. Depending on the abscess they would do one of three things if they do drain it...

1. Drain it and remove the drain straight away.

2. Drain it and leave the drain for a couple of days.

3. If they suspect there is a fistula attached they will drain it and the drain may stay in until further treatment resolves the fistula.

You will most likely require some sort of antibiotic treatment as well.

Good luck hun! I hope that it is something that is easily and quickly dealt with!

Hi I got the same call 2 years ago !!! I had an abscess and perforation and had no idea how serious it was the doc said I had to go to hospital straight away and it was non negotiable next thing I knew there were surgeons docs students probably the cleaner all examining me and I seriously was wondering what all the fuss was about.

Long story short the perforation had contained itself and I didn't need emergency surgery the abscess was about 4 cm CRP was 280 and they treated me with IV antibiotics for a week and oral antibiotics for 3 weeks to reduce the abscess. I felt a lot better after about 4 days. I was then put on steroids for about 6 months after the infection had gone. Hope this is of some help but I wasn't given a drain which I believe is unusual. That said my abscess didn't go completely and eventually I needed surgery due to the damage but try not to worry every situation is different.

I hope you feel better soon.

Well I'm still here in the hospital hooked up to IV antibiotics. Hoping I can escape without a surgery.
I'm supposed to be leaving in 7 days to take our kids to Disneyland for our daughters 3rd birthday, and going into the US scares me with this medical issue. And having crohns no insurance agency would give me travel medical coverage either. Fingers crossed I make it!!!

Good heavens! :eek2:

I hope the antibiotics settles things and keeps it that way! Good luck! :goodluck:

Oh dear I also had a holiday booked and they wouldn't let me go on it that said it was my very precautious GI making the descisions but that was because of the risk of re perforation. Have you had a CT scan do you have an abscess? Fingers crossed the antibiotics do the trick and your feeling better v soon and you can get away.

i had an Abscess 8 cm. the doctor said it was one of the biggest he had ever seen. it was sitting on top of my bladder. They put in a drain and I stayed in Hospital for 7 days..sent me home with the drain and had it in for an additional 7 days...the drain is out now, on a whole host of anitibiotics and prednisone...feeling OK, but not great. Stilll have several abscesses that they are hoping will drain on their own, but I have my doubts. It was a rough 6 weeks....had high, high fever and pain when I went to the bathroom for both pee and #2. Abscess is no fun, that's for sure. Going for a surgery consult in a few weeks, so see about getting the bad part of my colon out.

Susan when I saw the surgeon he said I had to have the bad part of intestine removed and it was the best thing I did i felt so much better with it removed. Scary at first and I was in complete denial. Your right about feeling rough it was the worst I've ever felt with extreme dizziness and really high fever.

My last abscess put me in hospital for 6 weeks on iv antibiotics, tpn, and hydrocortisone. Its still there though reduced (i've been home 3 weeks) but I feel like its still grumbling away and is coming back.
I hope yours all resolves so you can get away to Disneyland. Fingerscrossed.
