Accutane?

A few days ago, I started seeing a commercial advertising a class action suit against Accutane (some sort of acne drug) that has some link to CD, UC and colon removal. There have already been a few trials regarding this drug and settlements have been awarded to the plaintiffs.

I've never taken accutane (or any of its generics), have you? If you have, were you diagnosed pre or post usage of this drug?

Just curious, I suppose.

Happy Tuesday. :)

I've never used it before. I got the good genes when it comes to facial blemishes. :p I heard about it too but I'm not sure how it could cause IBD.

If they think that causes IBD and truely are sueing the company (proving it does) how do we not know a cause? Im very leery of those commercials as I saw them too and god only knows whether its truthful or not.

I have said this in other threads, but those lawsuits are most likely total BS where some lawyer is trying to make a ton of money while anyone involved wins a trivial $5. The only people who get rich in class action suits are the lawyers. The way I look at it is most people who go to the point they had to take accutane also took a number of antibiotics for years and years before a responsible pediatrician and/or dermatologist would even consider accutane due to the risk of liver damage. Since there is a more likely link between our microbiome and crohns than there is for accutane, I would venture a guess that those antibiotics we took before accutane are a much large factor in our developing this disease. Obviously this is just my personal speculation, but I think it is a fairly reasonable way to look at it.

Well said thats what I was going for but you said it much better. To me advertising that on tv is like vets advertising two for one neuters (which happens) or a human doc advertising on tv, it shouldnt happen.

I wondered about that too, I am told its auto immune, your born with it. looking back I had lots of hints that I had it.
I rarely if ever took antibiotics until now. I wish they would figure it out and stop with the theories. I am am sticking with auto immune. now if they could just figure out how to make it go away......

I had a dermatologist appt this week and when I mentioned that I have Crohn's now he brought up Accutane. He said that it is a definite trigger. So, maybe a person would have the genetic makeup to predispose them to IBD, but if they had never taken Accutane, then they never would have developed it. The link isn't made up by the legal companies. Accutane lists the development of IBD as a possible side effect of taking the drug. It seems like it would be a hard case to try though, because obviously something else could have triggered the disease in the person as well.
