I was diagnosed with Crohn's two years ago. My initial flare was really bad. I had another flare last November that thankfully didn't last too long. But about a month and a half ago, I started getting really sick. My doctor just put me on prednisone in hopes that it would heal me. He kept upping the dosage but it was doing nothing for me. He finally did a scope and I was sent to the hospital for 10 days from there, given IV steroids and antibiotics which really didn't do much for me at all. I sat in the hospital for about a week waiting for TB test results to come back so I could get Remicade. Finally, they gave it to me and I started feeling better. They gave me a double dose initially because of how terrible I was feeling, and I just went in for a second double dose a few days ago.
My issue is, I am still taking oral immunosuppressants as well. I have been on prednisone for a month and a half now and it will take several more weeks to ween me off of it. Yesterday I woke up with acne starting to break out all over my forehead. I have had a history of bad cystic acne throughout high school. Before getting diagnosed with Crohn's, I saw a dermatologist regularly and had finally gotten it under control. When I got my first flare, I broke out in a terrible rash while on prednisone and it never quite went away like I was told it would. It simply just developed into bad cystic acne all over my body. I started my freshman year of college like this while still dealing with some symptoms of my Crohn's, and it sent me into a downward spiral of depression. It made me feel so terrible about myself. That not only was this disease attacking my colon, but it was causing such terrible things for my skin.
My doctor started me on accutane last year. My mother was terrified because of the side effects in combination with the immunosuppressant I was taking. I was on it for months. My skin was constantly dry, but it paid off. My skin was clear by last fall when I stopped it. And now here I am, about a month and a half into prednisone and four doses of Remicade later. It's all starting over again.
Some questions:
Do you think the prednisone is causing this reaction or the Remicade, or both?
If it's the Remicade, will this be a long term problem for me?
Do you advise I see my dermatologist immediately?
Have any of you had experience with this as well?
