Added an illegal ingredient to my SCD diet last night to test my reaction!

***This addition was a bad idea, no symtpoms, just a bad addition. Don't do it =P******

Yay! Last night I tried a Hunt's BBQ sauce with high fructose corn syrup and Molasses being the illegals in it to see if I would get any symptoms. Success!! I still feel amazingly symptom free :) Was just a lick but I did the same with cocoa powder and flared bad the next couple days so im pretty confident.

I have been on SCD for 2 months now and will continue it for the rest of my life because I love eating so healthy and staying symptom free. I wont add the new ingredients I tried ALL the time but will definitely indulge from time to time. If I start to flare down the road, I will cut them out again, and then retry them when i am symptom free again to make sure it is that and not coincidence. I know now that for my Crohn's PERSONALLY cocoa powder is a no no for me and sugar is a yes! Well, so far anyways.

I would highly recommend this diet to anyone with IBD even just to find out which foods are the wrong foods for YOUR body. I finally found a way to get some real answers :) Make sure you do the diet super strict until completely symptom free to test ur tummy, and keep a long time span between the time you try new things. I personally would wait at least 2 months between each addition because some foods might slowly build up im sure. Im no medical professional, I just know from my own personal experience ;) I hope this is encouragement for those of you out there that are wary of trying diet for treatment because of being deprived of your favorite foods because there is a chance you might be able to add them later and still be symptom free!

That is so wonderful - to hear that you are doing so well on the SCD diet. Just 2 quick questions. How long do you use the yogurt before discarding and making another batch? How do you handle eating tomatoes - doesnt the acidity bother you at all?

I appreciate all the advice!!

I usually make a fresh batch every week because I use it so often in recipes. Probably no longer than 10 days. As for tomatoes it's like everything else for me, hurts during a flare but in remission I can eat anything legal! Even salads which I never thought I could eat again. People don't realize if it hurts during a flare it doesn't mean it will hurt during remission :) I am actually snacking on peanuts and raisins which I never ever thought I would be able to eat lol

be wary,
some foods will bring about an immediate reaction, that's a food intolerance or maybe an allergy.
other foods will, over time, mess up your gut microbia and bring about intestinal permeability (leaky gut) and then the disease (or another) will (re)surface.

having said that, there is a great joy in eating a few of the forbidden foods, i'm presently de-addicting myself to coffee, but after that i'm going to nibble some extra-dark organic chocolat.

I'm just quoting this so that people are forced to read it again :)

Well said Hugh!

My response wasn't aimed at you, I think we all tend to mistake that a lack of a negative response within x hours of taking the food doesn't mean it's safe. But from what you've said you were on your way to dying and the SCD saved your life. So yes, I'd stop trying to add things until you were asymptomatic for well over a year, heck, maybe never. And if you do add something, I wouldn't add anything with crap like high fructose corn syrup.

Yea I guess you are right :( i really wanted sugar back lol

I'd suggest playing with real food, not processed sh!t

I had a rice pudding this morning-
last night's rice
coconut cream and some water
raisins
little bit of honey.
heated and topped with sliced banana
(not paleo, but confirms to paleo 2.0 - 'archivore' diet and 'perfect health diet')

reflecting on my last post, i'd have to agree with david.
all my backwards steps have been when i start thinking "wow , i feel great, i deserve a treat"

So yes, I'd stop trying to add things until you were asymptomatic for well over a year, heck, maybe never. .

When you do add things in - REAL FOOD ONLY

Yea I guess you guys are right :( I just really wanted sugar back. Honey just doesn't sweeten my condiments and coffee to anything as desirable as the real thing lol. I guess I will just enjoy being symptom free and forget about the sugar. Will have to continue to experiment in my kitchen. Don't really miss any other foods so thinking I will just stick with a strict SCD =P

Thanks for the reality check! lol

Maybe you could add stevia? I don't know if it is SCD approved though...I've read some that say it is ok and other that say it is not so... where to draw the line...? It is 300 times more sweeten than saccharin but it does not raise blood sugar or feed fungi and bacteria. Maybe it could worth a try?

Thanks PsychoJane :) I'll look into Stevia. Didn't want to go there with the artificial sweeteners cuz of what they say. Stevia is a plant or something right? Will have to look into it. I know it's illegal in SCD but I would be game to try it. Im sure it's better that High Fructose Corn Syrup and Molasses.

Yup, it's a plant and it was unapproved in the US or something like that because of pressures apparently made by aspartame industries. I really don't know how accurate that info is but I've read it when I was looking into stevia.

it is legal as a dietary supplement but illegal as a sweetener.
( you yanks are always being screwed by the FDA)

The only way to address sugar cravings is to avoid sugar

There is processed and unprocessed stevia,
i'm guessing the processed is not gonna be good for ya :)
