Hi everybody!
I just saw my GI today, and he thinks I should "stress" my system a little to see if I can digest any fruits or vegetables (I haven't been eating them for months). Does anybody have any suggestions for a good fruit or vegetable to start out with? I am really afraid that eating something with too much fiber will cause lots of pain, but I have to start somewhere right? :ysmile:

I'm in a similar situation at the moment. My dietitian advised removing the skin from fruits and veg to limit the fibre intake, and she gave me this info sheet (it's specifically intended for people with IBS but was told to ignore that) which has a list of low, medium and high fibre fruits and vegetables on the third page. Is it definitely the fibre which is a problem for you? I tried carrots recently and even though they are low fibre I still found that they upset my gut. It might just be a case of trial and error, maybe you could take your time and test each new food for a few days to see how you tolerate it and build up from there.

I personally stick to steamed veggies, raw are too dense/hard on my gut. I also like bananas and and apple here and there, the softer variety.

Do you eat many cooked veggies and fruits? If not, I would begin with peeled (if applicable) and well cooked first. If that goes okay, add in some milder raw fruits and veggies that are still peeled (raw peeled apples, buttercrunch lettuce, etc). I would hold off on raw berries (the seeds) until you have tried other things first.

Bananas, baked apple, pulp free juices, avocados, puréed fruit or veg of most varieties without seed are all good places to start.

I agree it's best to start with well cooked or pureéd fruit/veg rather than eating raw. Bananas are high in fibre so be careful with them.

I wouldn't worry about bananas. It's one of the recommended foods when really flaring and post surgery. I think it's mostly soluble fiber.

I've been on a low residue diet and just added cantalope and had no problem with it. (I've only eaten ripe bananas on the low res diet) so I'm thrilled to add a new fruit! Next will be a small salad of butterleaf lettuce (soft) and peeled/de-seeded English cucumber. I have other fruits and veggies to try... I forgot and will look at the list and post them for you. :rosette1:

Other fruits and veggies to try that are still considered low residue/low fiber:

Cooked: Asparagus (young), Cauliflower, Broccolini, Skinless roasted red peppers

No seeds, skin or membranes: Apple, apricots, grapefruit, honeydew, melon, nectarines, oranges, watermelon

Apple (peeled, of course), either stewed or grated, is good and helps thicken the BMs. Stewed plums, pureed when you first introduce them, seem to be the easiest of the stone fruits. I find that oranges and orange juice are far too acid for me.
