crohnies will travel,

So I am leaving Friday in the night for New York City. My very first visit to the big apple.

I'll be staying at a crappy hotel in New jersey and I'll be spending three day with my wife alone in New York.

I want to visit the Aircraft carrier and the last space Shuttle to have flown. The empire state building and the big Macy store (my wife wants that one)

We got a special day pass for one day which we will try and use a lot to get to see a few attraction. Can't wait to see the statue of liberty and to buy a hot dog from a street vendor near time square. (wonder how my gut will react to a hot dog :) )

Anybody else have some suggestions?

Nice inexpensive restaurants or cool places to visit?

Of course I have to recommend the 9-11 memorial.....although I haven't been there myself.

Macys' is cool - love the old wooden escalators!!!

FAO Schwartz.....maybe stop at some of the stores along 5th Ave - of course Cartier, Tiffany's etc.....

You can also stop along Broadway and see about snagging some tickets to a show - there used to be booths that sold them - or even go to the box office and ask.....I remember seeing Cats umpteen years ago for only $10-!

I love just walking around in Manhattan. I have visited about half a dozen times and have only taken subway once and that was to get to the office (and back) in Jersey City. So my advice would be just to get out on foot and walk from Central Park right down to the Staten Island ferry and enjoy the sights and sounds. I also have a 4 day trip to NYC planned for my wife's birthday in December, cannot wait as it is our first trip away without the kids!

Thank you for the suggestions. It's also my first trip without our 3 kids. They are mad at us but we are going to enjoy it as much as possible.

Also will be my first trip where I can have sex in another country LOL

The other times the kids were always to close

I found that taking the visitor bus around the whole of Manhatten Island was great for orienting myself and deciding what things I wanted to go and visit. You can do it in 2 halves - north and south.

This is hilarious. :thumright:

If the weather is nice and you enjoy walking, you should visit the Highline - http://www.thehighline.org. It runs for about a mile above the streets from 14th Street to roughly 30th Street (though you can get off at various points along the way). It's a nice stroll and you get to see the city from on high. There are also some food/snack options along the way.

What type of cuisine do and your wife you enjoy?

I agree wholeheartedly; the Highline is a great walk. The Chelsea Market is well worth visiting and is right near one of the entrances to the Highline.

There are so many things to do, but if you are interested in that sort of thing, the National Museum of the American Indian in Lower Manhattan is fascinating. Then you can take a ride on the Staten Island ferry to see the Statue of Liberty.

Indeed there are so many different things to do. It's crazy.

We are not very picky when it comes to food. We like to try everything as long is it's not to spicy I can,t handle that.

Geewilikers! Look at alla ya'll foreigners having been to New York. As a born and bred Texan, I am a classic in stating that I have never been there. Yankees live in those parts and talk funny.

More stuff to see:

The Tenement Museum on the Upper East Side...A bit pricey but the tour is fantastic
Ellis island Museum...Very interesting.
9/11 Memorial is very moving

Have fun...Without the kids!! My husband and I were there for a week without our three kids this summer. Everyone deserves a few days with no responsibilities!!

I have no desire to go to New York either. Just far too many Texans there.

I would skip the hotdog. If you are going to risk being ill, it should be for something better than a wiener.

Have fun

Dan

But the Hotdog is a classic thing.. in canada we have no hawkers selling food on the street LOL

Leaving in the night hope everything will go well.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I went, I saw and I conquered!!

It was a fantastic trip. New York is such a big and wonderful city to visit. It's clean populated... so many people so many beautiful things to see.

And so many honkers!!! The first thing I noticed when I step foot in Manhattan is all the people using their horns on their cars. Everybody honks for everything it's crazy!!

It was just fantastic...

That's terrific. :yoshijumpjoy: What did you see/do that you enjoyed most?

I loved New York, too, and would go back at the drop of a hat - it's just a bit far from here.
