Alcohol and impacts on Abscess/Fistulas?

Hi all,

About 6 weeks ago I was diagnosed with an abscess. Everything was starting to clear up until a week or so ago when I went on vacation. I had 2-3 alcohol drinks (beers) per night for about a week and I immediately noticed my abscess was draining a lot more then previously. After my vacation, I returned home and didn't have anything to drink and low and behold, my abscess is draining much less like it was before.

My question...does alcohol impact abscess/fistula draining and healing? When I asked the doctor, they said it had no impact, but I really question whether this is true or not. I didn't find much supporting evidence on the Internet one way or the other so I was hoping others may have an opinion.

I have to see the doctor yet again next week to determine how to treat what may likely be a fistula, but I kind of wonder I have an abscess, which merely got worse because of alcohol.

I also drink quite a bit of coffee and I guess the same question holds as well.

Thanks in advance.

Hi. My abscesses have never been effected by anything I drink. I know beer can increase out put so a fistula would be effected.

I just got back from the ER and I thought I had an abscess. The GI told me tannins in some alcoholic beverages drastically raise inflammation levels in some patients and so ideally if you have fistulas or abscesses alcohol should be cut out completely. *sigh* I hope you are feeling better P.I.T.A, it is a scary thing to have this illness. *hugs*
