This question is directly from DS. He made me add the exclamation point in the title too.

He has been having pus leak out his rectum for a week now. GI is aware and has him on Flagyl and Cipro. We'll see him again in two days.

In the meantime... the leaking is really, really annoying him. Especially at night. He wants to know if there's anything we can do. He has a roll of toilet paper next to his bed and is wiping every 15 minutes or so. The feeling of it leaking keeps him awake.

It is worse at night for some reason and he has tried laying in different positions. He has also tried sticking tp in there to absorb it, but that bugs him too.

Any suggestions? He just wants to get some sleep.

Hi Mehita, haven't been on the forum to post for ages but still read every day. Sometimes posting just seems too real if you get my drift?! But lately I have noticed a few posts that I really felt I should answer, even just to let you know I care, I understand, and some days are really tough!
My DS had a perianal abscess develop just over 12 months ago. It did develop into a fistula, lucky us! The abscess itself actually drained for several months, I know this because what was draining was, as you say, a pus like material. After about 6 months of flagyl the pus finally cleared, but as a fistula had developed (as confirmed by an MRI) the leakage simply changed to fecal matter, yay...:(
After several days of dealing with the pus we had to move him to Depends men's pads, fun for a teenage boy I know! It was actually really hard for me to do, but it was the only thing that gave him security to know he wouldn't leak or smell. The abscess and eventually fistula are so close to his bottom that it is impossible to tell the difference between anal leakage and fistula leakage.
We have found Calmoseptine to be amazing, it creates a barrier (which helps protect the area from constant wetness, and also gives significant pain relief (as he has gone on to develop skin tags, fissures etc). All in all it is really difficult for a teen. I just wanted to let you know you are not alone.
Blessings, Ams

I was going to recommend the depends or even a maxi pad if the depends is uncomfortable. Get one of the ultra thins so it wouldn't be so uncomfortable. Calmoseptine is a great idea.

Yes, maxipad - My husband has done for abscess leakage in the past and no one has to know. Like kim says - ultra thin.

Yup or toilet paper rolled up and placed between the cheeks works awesome too!!!! Oh the joys of being a chronie!!! Lol

If the toilet paper bothers him, can you try a wad of cotton??? Instead of buying cotton balls, I've seen rolls of cotton, perhaps positioning one or two strips of cotton would be softer and less noticeable (as far as how it feels) than a wad of scrunched up toilet paper.
