Hi there.

I have UC and have been having a flare up for about a month. I'm on oral and rectal meds, but still have symptoms most of the day...mostly the urge to go to the bathroom. I would LOVE to be able to reduce those symptoms, especially since i have a camping trip this weekend.

Anyone have any tips for something I can eat, drink, OTC meds, or anything that will at least temporarily block my urge to go?

Thanks in advance!

As Pen has said, bananas and applesauce (the kind with no sugar added) both work well to bind things up and reduce diarrhea. If you can get a prescription, you may want to ask about Lomotil - it's an anti-diarrhea med similar to Imodium. I tried Imodium and it did nothing for me, but Lomotil works wonders. I just take one, or two on really really bad days, and it stops the d within about 20 to 30 minutes and it usually remains stopped for the entire day. But it's prescription so you'll have to ask your doc about it. What meds are you currently on?

I always carry loperamide hydrochloride tablets (cheap OTC) especially on backpacking trips. It usually works great. For major flares, however, nothing I have found works. Applesauce and bananas sounds reasonable though. I will have to try that.

homemade chicken broth ( homemade because there are additives in the canned stuff that they are not required to list)
