My brother was diagnosed with crohns 7 years ago, i was diagnosed 5 years ago. My my mum's, mum died from undiagnosed bowel problems, and i have 2 cousins on my mums side who have both had multiple surgeries due to crohns.
My dads sister was recently diagnosed with severe crohns, and 1 of my dads cousins have crohns, another has bowel cancer and another of his cousins is married to a guy with bowel cancer! I know crohns is hereditary and all but seriously?!?! What is up with this. What are the chances!

Small world I guess. :p Yes Crohn's is on both sides of my family. My fiance has bowel issues on both sides of his family but no one has had a diagnosis. That I find odd more than anything. Chances are our children or our grandchildren will have something bowel related.

We used to think that the Crohn's Disease came from just my father's side of the family. There are several relatives with it, and my Paternal Grandfather had a severe case of CD. My mother is unsure about her family. She has never heard of it from her side, but she does have a couple of cousins that have ended up with colostomy bags. That could be caused by other conditions too though. We find it ironic that out of four children, my brother and I both have CD, and it's still being determined whether one of my sisters has it as well. She has tested positive on the Prometheus Lab blood tests, but they need further evidence to diagnose her. If her scopes come out positive, then it will be three out of four children. What are the odds of that?

It's possible that IBD is on both sides of my family. On my dad's side, dad's mom's father had UC. On my mom's side, my mom's father had a "sensitive stomach" all his life and then died of colon cancer. Not sure if he had an undiagnosed IBD that led to the cancer. I'm the only one currently alive in my family who has (probable) IBD. I'm still undiagnosed but it's most likely some form of IBD. Guess I just managed to get the bad genetics from both sides!

Hi,
I was recently diagnosed after both of my children were. How could they ever say they are not "sure" if heredity could be a factor? :ybatty:

I don't have IBD anywhere in my family tree! Except for my mum's dog (we're not blood relations though!) which suggests environmental factors played a part.
