anyone ever have a BAD lower back strain?

I still have this real bad lower back strain.. im walking with a walker still and its so hard to get out of my recliner.

I'm really sorry you are having to shuffle around....How long have you been having symptoms?

Sorry to hear that Kasper. How long have you had this? Sounds nasty!

I have had some experience with this. I've always been kinda weak in that area. A few years ago I popped a disc out in my lower back and it was really, really uncomfortable. I went straght to Emergency and got xrayed and that's when I fould it was more than a pulled muscle!

I was given exercises to help ease it back in. No fun. but it worked and now I do regular back stretches and seem to have no problems with it. Just tightness from time to time.

It sounds like you are bad enough that you really need to get it seen to!

I meant to add, I would get 'stick' too and have real trouble getting out of a chair or bed. The car was difficult! And when i did the lying on the floor on my sromach thing, which was recommended, I had to be helped up a few times!

Yup, I fell over in the hills and squashed a disk in my back. It flares up every now and again. Gabapentin is the only thing that seems to actually controls the pain.

I fell water skiing quite a few years ago and had 1 herniaed disc and 1 bulging disc in my lower back. I was put flat on my back for a month and had to go to the chiropractor 3 times a week for about 3 months just to avoid surgery. I had to do some stretching exercises the whole time. Laid flat on my back and slowly pulled my knee to my chest and repeated with the other leg for about 10 mins. every hour.

Oooh, Pirate, mine was nothign as bad as that, however all I did was bend over to put away some clothes in the bottom drawer!!

Remember, you always need to bend at the knees. You can strain your back just by picking up a pencil if you don't squat and lift the proper way.

I couldn't do anything. My family made fun of Janis cause she even had to wash my feet cause I couldn't reach them.

Thanks Pirate, I do know about the bending at the knees. We had an ad campaign here a while ago 'Don't use your back like a crane'. It's amazing doing something so tiny can cause such a big problem! Last time I put it out a wee bit I was cleaning my teeth!

well heres the thing. i didnt hurt myself by falling; i wasn't hit. i do have osteoporosis in the lower lumbar spine but my doctor said there should be no pain unless i fractured something which i didnt.

it all started when i lifted something sitting down... not good.

yes i need support to walk. im very thin so thats another problem. its been going on for awile now. using the walker since december 18th. I feel so weak like i cant even stand with the walker very long. I know i need xrays but im scared of going up and down the stairs from my home.

im sleeping in a recliner.

You need to get it checked out kasper. You might make things worse by ignoring it. Please go get it checked out.

That's a month buddy - time to get it checked out! You don't want to miss something and, well - be stuck on that darn walker forever. My aunt has bad osteo - she was suffering from a bone fracture in her foot - and while she was healing that up for over 6 months - now she has a fracture in her hip from walking around funny with the "boot" on her foot supposedly. She is miserable. Probably put up with the pain for waaaay too long and now she is in a predicament. Please figure a way out to get down those stairs and get it checked out.

always got to watch for Sacroiliitis. I hope it is nothing more than some pulled muscles though.

If there is nothing broke or injured, such as a disk, you most likely have vertebrae out of place.

Since I have a specific problem with this, I have learned how to tell if I have just strained the muscles or if I have a vertebrae out of place. In my case it is always the L-2 that slips out of place. I have also learned how to put it back into place myself. About 75% of the time I can do this. If I cannot get it into place, I have to go to a Chiropractor. Any of them can do this, as it is a common problem.

I was in the moving business, so this was not an uncommon occurrence. It is not so much related to how much you are lifting, as it is the position you are in when you are lifting. That is another way you can tell if it is strain related to vertebrae out of place or just a simple strain. If you were not lifting anything far heavier than you normally can handle, then it is most likely a slipped vertebrae. The position made it happen, not the weight.

If you have eliminated a bulging disk or fracture, a normal back strain should heal in about a week. In another words, you should notice improvement in that time.

If I go over that week time frame, I have a vertebrae out of place. As long as it is out of place, you have muscles that are stretched out of place, and the pain will not get better. After the Chiropractic adjustment, it will feel more sore the next day, and after that it will get progressively better. One week after the adjustment, you should be noticeably better, close to normal.

In 15 minutes they will be able to tell you if this is the case or not. Tell them you have osteoporosis, as there are different methods to line up the vertebrae, and some are gentle, and others are more forceful. I tell them to use the gentle method, as I do not like someone wrenching on my back.

Pay attention to how they do this, as you can duplicate it at home if this becomes a reoccurring problem, as it is for me. The gentle method can be duplicated, I would not try the forceful method, as you could really harm someone.

If the Chiropractor cannot help you, then you need to have a some more specific tests to find out what the problem is. Most back problems are simple strains or misalignment's, so that is a good place to start.

I actually go to an Amish chiropractor. I use to suffer from migranes and lower back problems and since I started seeing him I haven't had a problem. He never took any schooling and has no degrees, but he is good and really knows what he's doing.

Strongly Disagree. Spondylolisthesis refers to electric Shocks, nerve pain down the leg, tingling and numbness.

i dont have any of these symptoms. Thanks for trying though. Always appreciate it

Spondylolisthesis is something else, and sounds much more serious. I do not get shocks or any leg problems. I simply can't straighten out, as the back pain keeps you bent over.

The problem I have is if I bend over to pick something up, no matter how little it weighs, and twist to the left, the L-2 vertebrae will rotate too far and there it is stuck. I do not know what defect makes this possible, but I have beat up my back all of my life, and it is beginning to show.

On rare occasions the vertebrae will slip back in place without me doing anything. Usually I have to lay on my back, pull my left knee up and cross it over my extended right leg, and have my wife rock the left leg over the right until it slips back into place. if she can't get it, I have to go to the Chiropractor, who does basically the same thing, only they are better at it. I usually can feel it move when it pops in.

It does not hurt, to have it put back into place. It is a relief because you walk out upright, although the muscles are still sore, as they are stretched out of place. The sharp twinging is gone as I suppose some nerves get pinched also.

They can feel if there is something out of place. I have gone to various Chiropractors for this, and they always locate that very spot. They see it all of the time. For some reason this area is vulnerable to injury.

Have you ever try consult in a chiropractor or physical therapist it is good to go with them to help you check about your back problem.
