Hi I saw an net on Tuesday and they have decided to take my tonsils out at the start of February to coincide 4 weeks into my remicade treatment due to the ongoing problems I have been having with my throat, ears and glands.

Just wondering if anyone has their tonsils out as an adult and how the recovery went?
Thanks

Haven't had my tonsils out, but had a tonsular abscess which i spent a week in hospital with. Not positive about recovery for adults getting tonsils out but think its fairly quick and straightforward. Will certainly be a relief getting it done as tonsilits can make you feel lousy. Good luck with it all.

Hey macdonald88! Feel free to check out my thread I made about it here: http://www.crohnsforum.com/showthread.php?t=43407

Got mine removed on the 18th so I can start Remicade in January. I think I might have done well on Humira if I had them removed sooner but oh well.

In my thread I go over the procedure and recovery a bit. Right now I'm 8 days in recovery and everything seems spicy. No stitches, they cauterized the area and caused some burning on my tongue and the roof of my mouth and on the sides of my mouth. Be prepared to have many soft and bland foods. So far the worst days for me were day 5-8 which I'm told is common by the ER doc I saw on day 5 cause I thought I might have an infection. No infection, just normal healing process. :p

Its not fun but its really not that bad and recovery goes fairly quick. So far I think its worth it and it seems like my recovery is going pretty smoothly. I'm 30 so was told it's be really bad but its really not. I was fully put to sleep and just have a sore mouth and throat now. I'm able to eat eggs and soft noodles just fine. Minimal salt and spices are a must. Even butter can hurt a bit. Nothing hot either. Keep it warm and soft and experiment from time to time but have a safe drink on hand when you do. ;)

I've been taking Lortab and Motrin for the pain. I don't wash my mouth out or gargle with salt water as some suggest. Its not needed and will burn like a mother so I don't suggest it. :p If you smoke you'll want to quit or at least cut down cause at first you'll feel fine but things get worse after a few days and those will burn.

You'll also be really tired the first few days so take advantage of it and sleep as much as you can. Stay on top of the pain meds the first week (set an alarm at night to take them again) cause it takes longer to get rid of the pain than to keep it at bay.

I didn't have any vomiting or bleeding so so far its the easiest and quickest surgery I've had so far. I've had a bowel resection, central IV and had my impacted wisdom teeth removed surgically and this is far easier than any of those surgeries.

Feel free to ask any specific questions. I'll be having my followup appointment in early January to make sure everything is healing up right and to get the paper for an OK to start Remicade. Take care! Its not as bad as everyone says that's for sure! :)

Thanks Everyone for your repsonses.

Hope the recovery is going well crabby and thank you for all the useful information, you don't hear about many adults getting their tonsils out so it is hard to find out what the recovery process etc is like. I'm 24 and only know people who had it done as a child.

I'm glad your op went well, i will certainly be making most of the rest period. My specialist said i would be off about 2 weeks to allow me to fully recover.

I am getting my next remicade infusion on 3rd January then i have my pre op assessment on the 8th so i will hopefully get a date for it then as it has to be the first two weeks in february to coincide with my infusion. I will go in get the op and stay over night, it was either get it done in feb or april but we are going to america in may so i wanted to be fully recovered for when we go away so i am able to enjoy my time.

I would be interested to see how you are getting on in a few weeks and i really hope it has started to relieve some of your symptoms. I hope everything goes well and your able to start the remicade as soon as possible, i keep getting varied progress with it so i am hoping this will make a difference.

I know this sounds strange but does it feel different when you swallow? For some reason i am really anxious about getting it done, when i had part of my bowel out i didn't think twice about it and only had 2 days notice before i got it so its all very strange preparing.

Thanks again :)

I'll try to keep you updated but feel free to drop me a line anytime. :)

I haven't fully healed yet so there's some swelling. Sometimes it felt like something would take a while to go down and I discovered that that's because the area that was cauterized was scaring over and moist tissue was kind of floating around/building up. If that grosses you out I don't recommend looking in the mirror with a flashlight (I do it all the time just to check the healing, got in the habit of doing that with all the throat infections before). Right now it feels like a mild sore throat. It makes your ears hurt a bit which is more annoying than anything. I don't think it will feel different when I swallow once I'm fully healed and the swelling has gone down.

Hi macdonald88,

I had my tonsils out twice. The first time I was 6 years old (a very long time ago) and then again when I was 25 years old I started getting "tonsilitis" in what was either remanants of the tonsils or they started to grow back (docs didn't know). The second time as an adult was very uneventful. It was a long time ago too but I only remember having a sore throat for a couple of weeks and missed a few weeks of work as I recovered. I did have Crohn's then but was not on any meds or having problems. This was in the mid-80s so I don't think they had the biologicals back then. Hopefully you will go through it without any problems. :) Good luck with your surgery and with the remicade. I am on methotrexate but it's not working so my GI doc is now considering biologics. Not sure which one I will try yet. I will be interested to see how you find the remicade.

Thanks Crabby I hope you managed to enjoy some sort of Christmas meal but in the long run this will be worth it. When is your next check up?

My ears are in constant agony everyday so hopefully once the initial swelling comes down and I have fully recovered the specialist is hoping that it will reduce 80% of my symptoms.

Jonique - I'm glad that it mad a difference to you and I really hope if you go onto biological that it is effective for you. I'm sorta in limbo land I'm not sure if it's working but don't want to stop it as that is the only option in the uk well most advanced. I have been on it since October 2011 and had a 2 months period where I went on the humira injection but did not find it worked for me at all I am currently on remicade and will stick with it for just now but I still have a lot of symptoms think I will speak to my specialist when I see him in January and see what he thinks.

Thanks Crabby I will discuss it when I go for my appointment on the 8th I really hope that it's not a long lasting problem taste is our main sense and I certainly enjoy good food. I hope you get an answer from the ENT. Hope the rest of your recovery process is going better.
